wilfredo Posted October 28, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use SanDisk Extreme III cards but every now and then I get a message on my LCD saying that the card is LOCKED when it is not. If I use a SanDisk Ultra II it's even worse so I don't bother with those any more. Is there an absolute top rated SD card for use with the M8? I sent the camera to Leica earlier this year and they cleaned the contacts, other than that they could not detect anything wrong. Cheers.
Advertisement Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 Hi wilfredo, Take a look here Best sd card?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mzcloud Posted October 28, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 28, 2009 I never had that problem and used the Ultra and Extreme. I think these are the best SDs in the market right now
ptarmigan Posted October 28, 2009 Share #3 Posted October 28, 2009 I am using Extreme III 2 and 4 gb cards and two Extreme class 10 8gb cards with no problems so far.
Nicoleica Posted October 28, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 28, 2009 I use mostly Lexar Professional cards, and have never encountered a problem when using one. I have not encountered any problems with Sandisk cards either. I use these cards in several different cameras, but I always re-format them in the camera before use. I'm also careful to avoid touching the contacts and I keep them in their plastic cases when not in use. (In other words, I follow the care instructions. ) I believe that this helps to avoid potential problems.

shootinglulu Posted October 28, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 28, 2009 I read here, sometime time ago, that Panasonic cards are very good.
ArtZ Posted October 28, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Wilfredo, I used 4 x 2GB Sandisk Extreme III together with 4 x 2GB Transcend 150X with old firmware. Since SDHC is available on the M8, I use 2 x 4GB Sandisk Class 6 together with 4 x 16GB Transcend Class 6 (and occasionally 1 x 32GB Panasonic Class 4). My favorites ones are 16GB Transcend Class 6 (and they're the cheapest!)... I have even washed one of them at 40ºC in the washing machine (it was in a pocket of my jeans) and stills works! Though I never had problems with Sandisk cards, I know they use their own patents over SDHC standards to improve speed, reliability and security. I cannot format them in a Lexar card reader while I can format the Transcend and Panasonic.
wilfredo Posted October 28, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted October 28, 2009 If no one has had this issue, then I have to conclude Leica failed in fixing the problem. They cleaned the contacts and sent it back to me in the same condition. BTW I never touch the contacts on the cards. I will try re-formatting the cards and see what happens? The problem is that this is hit and miss, you never know when it is going to act-up. Thank you all for your thoughts on this.
wparsonsgisnet Posted October 28, 2009 Share #9 Posted October 28, 2009 Wilfredo, I have been using Ridata 135x 2GB and Sandisk 2GB and 8GB Ultra II's in my M8's for a long time with no problems -- UNLESS the batteries are low. Are you sure your batteries were full of piss and vinegar? It makes a difference if they're ready to go.
john_newell Posted October 28, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 28, 2009 I have been using Sandisk cards of every flavor and type in every sort of camera and have never, ever had anything like what you're reporting happen...but...I have read occasionally of some odd errors that can result from not-quite-right formatting of the card. Panasonic has a free small utility program that supposedly ensures that an SDHC card gets correctly formatted. You can read a description of the program and download/install it HERE. It's a small chance, but might be worthwhile since it won't cost any money or take more than a few minutes.

BTW, the cards work flawlessly on my Canon.
wilfredo Posted October 28, 2009 Author Share #12 Posted October 28, 2009 I just turned my M8 on and had some difficulties with the same "Card is Locked" appearing on the LCD. After about five tries it worked. After it started working again I went ahead and formatted my cards (I really don't see the need for this, none of my other cameras require this) so I'll see what happens? If I get the message again, I'll call Leica and send it back. Hopefully they won't charge me for the fix since it is the second time it is going back for the same reason. Some time ago I do remember seeing a list of SD cards that don't work on the M8 but the SanDisk Extreme III was cleared for use.
Seeingeye Posted October 28, 2009 Share #13 Posted October 28, 2009 I have a couple of Kingston 4 GB SDHC cards that occasionally prove troublesome. When turning the camera on, sometimes I get a card full message, even though there is space on the card. Turning the camera off and back on again has always fixed it, although it might require a couple of attempts. Other members on this forum have reported similar issues previously, so I know it is not my specific camera per se. For this reason, I try to avoid using these cards in my M8. They work fine in my Canon G9. Usually, I have either a 4 GB Extreme III or 2 GB Ultra II in the M8 and they are both trouble free. I have even used a 1 GB Tesco card without problem, even though it has never appeared on any list of approved cards. Regards Mike
dfdann Posted October 29, 2009 Share #14 Posted October 29, 2009 Wilfredo I occassionally get the same message you mention on several different cards including the Ultra 11 cards. If I slide the card in and out several times it will work perfectly. Cheers, Dan
pgk Posted October 29, 2009 Share #15 Posted October 29, 2009 Usually when you get a "Card is Locked" message, it means that the little locking tab is in the locked position. I'm not sure of the technicalities but a possibility is that the tab tells the camera that it is locked either electronically or physically and if so it is possible that for some reason this is not relaying to the camera correctly. Just as a thought why not try moving the tab back and forwards several times to see if this helps - it can't hurt and costs nothing!
patackroyd Posted October 29, 2009 Share #16 Posted October 29, 2009 Wilfredo I have been having the same problem, I have spent the last week trying to sort it out, it is not the cards, mine were all brand new, it is not the camera as such. For me it is looking like it is a faulty battery charger. The batteries on charge appear to charge as normal, on inserting the batteries in the camera the three blocks in the LCD indicating battery charge appear as normal, however on switching on, sd card locked appears. I was convinced this was a power supply problem and as I had tried everything else it was the only option left, other than a faulty camera. Fortunateley I have two chargers so I charged the batteries in my other charger and for the last two days I have had no problems. I am still in test mode and I want more than a couple of days to feel 100% sure but I think I may have found the culprit. Good luck I know exactly how frustrating this is. john_newell Posted October 29, 2009 Share #17 Posted October 29, 2009 I have a recollection of some threads a while back that traced other M8 issues to defective battery chargers. It might be worth trying to do some searching in the archives to see what the reports were. I'm sorry I don't remember more clearly what the issues were... PeterP Posted November 4, 2009 Share #19 Posted November 4, 2009 Wilfredo, I tend to dedicate my cards to Canon or Leica, and not interchange them. I have noticed writing errors on Leica w/ low battery power. Changing Batteries, reinserting card, and turning the camera off and on again have resolved most issues. I have found that once formatted, cards do not need to be reformatted, Leica being the exception w/ firmware upgrades. I have also started discarding cards that I get reading errors on a re-occuring basis, cards are cheap these days - and although the better ones have a lifetime guarantee I find it hardly worth losing shots. Probably tossed 2 out of 16 cards in the last year. For Leica I use 4gb only, for Canon 4gb, 8gb, 16gb depending on the body By the way try the Zeiss 21mm for your Canon - great lens. Cheers, PeterP
