Screen Protector?

I had a bad experience with the hard plastic screen protectors with the adhesive backing.

When the protector got scratched up, and I tried to remove it from my M8, it completely removed (it stuck to the screen too well) the plastic protector on the Camera itself. It seems Leica uses an adhesive to attach its own screen protector to the M8/9 body. Leica replaced my screen free of charge.

What do I do now? I use very thin clear plastic (acitate, plexiglass, etc,,) cut to the size of the M8/9 screen. I then use clear Scotch tape in thin strips tape the edges of the plastic to the camera body. It works, and it is cheap! not pretty, but I would rather do this than repeat what happened to me before.

Leica should offer for purchase replacement screens with a peel off adhesive back that one could install. I could see an aftermarket supplier for these ($40 or so) as a complete screen replacement. remember, these things are held on with adhesive tape in the first place, so removing the old one, and instaling a new one should be an easy do it yourself job. This way, you would not worry too much if you scratch the screen, in that it is diaposable, and can be replaced cheaply!

I'm going to try one of these, which is listed on Adorama's website for $25.00:

Giottos Aegis Professional Glass LCD Screen Protector for Leica M8, 12 Layers of Multi-Coatings Each Side.

Mfr. Part: SP8250 SKU: GTSP8250

Giotto's new professional optical screen protector is named "AEGIS" a rigid optic glass from Zeiss, Germany. It protects the LCD panel against abrasion, scratches or incident impact. Multi-layer efficient anti-reflective coatings can help with clarity and color blindness. No more residual image or ghost image, always high definition and transmission on your LCD screen. Suitable for all digital cameras and DV's.

This is what Canon does. You can pop off a plastic screen and replace it, If I recall properly, people use a small suction cup to lift the old screen off. IIRC, a new screen for a 5D was something like $15-20.

Acmaxx acrylic and GGS glass work well. Film versions like Invisible Shield/Zagg may or may not suit you due to the orange peel effect. I have read assertions that the GGS glass screens work better than the similar Giotto screens but have no personal comparative experience myself.

I got the same screen brt5 mentions - Giotto 8250 (8250 refers to the size and coating layers)

Professional LCD Protectors - scroll down to "NORMAL" at the bottom

Schott glass, not sapphire, but it's only $25.00. And comes with instructions for removal (heat it with a hair dryer to soften the adhesive) as well as installation.

I don't even notice it's there.

My Acmaxx protector screens stick around the LCD screen. They don't touch the screen itself. Did not test them on Leica bodies though (Canon only).

I may try out the ACMAXX screen, but on my M8's I used the cheapo plastic films you speak of. Mine were the hoodman brand, and they were large sheets that had to be cut down. They may also come in the correct size, I'm not sure.

I had to replace them every once in a while but they did protect the M8's LCD cover-- they were still pristine when I sold the cameras recently.

Google "ZAGG" and "Best Skins Ever". Both the same material, practically unscratchable, won't peel at the edges. Somewhat fussy to install but once done, it's forever. Have them on my PDA, iPod, GPS NAV, all my camera screens. The "Best Skins Ever" group sells it in a sheet too, most economical if you're handy with ruler and scissors. FWIW if you're very accurate you can skip the instructions that say to use soapy water to install. Just apply it dry from one end with a credit card as a squeegee. The reason for the water is so you can slide it round if you don't get it lined up well from the start. Dry, it's impossible to peel/resposition without stretching it beyond usability.
