who ordered a Silver M9 on the first day and are still waiting

I did.

Alas, Rick's register shows that very few grey models have shipped. On Friday I told my dealer to send me whichever color he gets in next - which I expect to be black.

I am sure this had to be asked already but more time has gone by and I was wondering if anyone in the States has got theres and who is waiting?

I ordered a grey on on the 5th of August and I am still waiting. I have been told by Leica UK that if I change to Black, I can have mine next week but if I want grey, the wait may be considerable. As I don't like the rubberish covering on the grey, I am quite comfortable having black. If grey had arrived I would have fitted Cameraleather as soon as I could have ordered it, either slate blue kidskin or Rollei black magic embossed leather, like I have on my M8. I think the slate blue would have looked great on a grey M9, it comes out a bit darker than appears on this M3.

I ordered gray on 9/9; But I also said it was a preference and not a requirement and I'd take the first of either gray or black that was available. So far I am emptyhanded.

Ordered 9/11 steel grey only from David Farkas. Seen neither hide nor hair of camera and Dale's Photo in Florida won't even tell me where I am on the order list. I suspect they don't really have a first come first serve system, though they seem to claim that. This is very frustrating.

It's well documented that Leica manufactures products in individual runs, I'd say they ran off some cameras in both colours before launch, many silver units became demo or promo cameras, with the surplus being sold.

You'll probably find it's a little time consuming to switch the enameling process over to other colours (just guessing)... So we may find everyone with a silver pre-order starts seeing their cameras around the same time.

At the moment I'd agree with yanidel and hypothesize this will be in early November.

For the record I paid in full on 09/09/09 and had the first legitemate silver order in Australia. I have had confirmation from the national distributor that no silvers have arrived for sale down under, and we both did maths based on Leica's own 08/09 fiscal report and found that based on the approximate number of units manufactured (~1300) Aus is getting the short end of the stick. But I suppose Leica wants to invest more in the biggest market for them, Japan and the greater East Asian region.

I ordered a steel grey on August 1st or 2nd and was told that I was the first one to order at my dealer.

I got a call yesterday afternoon to say that they'd received their first M9 and did I want it. It was black. I declined  as I really want a grey one. (Well actually I'd like a chrome one but that's another story!). That was a tough call and I was tempted to take the black one ... but resisted.

No ETA still on the grey.

Graham,

I was offered this choice a month ago and said I would wait. I decided afterwards I was an idiot, as I don't like the rubber covering on the grey one very much anyway. I have now said I will take the next colour which arrives, which Leica says should be on Thursday and be black. If it was chrome or black, I would wait for chrome but not for grey. This will be only the second M9 this premiere dealer will have had. I want to get in before VAT goes back up to at least 17.5% in the UK and maybe 20% plus there is a rumour of a UK price increase near the end of the year, not least due to the weak pound.

Wilson,

I hear you. I decided early on to take the first available but then the more I thought about it decided that since I'm waiting anyway that I may as well get what I really wanted. The grip doesn't matter that much as my camera will sit in my Luigi case anyway. I have mostly chrome/silver lenses which I think will look better on grey vs black, although they don't look half bad on black either!

When the dealer calls again with the next camera and it's still black I'll see how strong my resolve really is! :D

Graham,

My final deciding point was in a phone call a couple of days ago from a friend who is a member here and lives in France. He had seen a grey one come back to Maison du Leica, where the owner was complaining that even his finger nails were scratching the grey finish (no he wasn't Wolverine from the X-Men). Mind you I don't know if the painted black finish is any more robust. I do wish they had kept chrome. My 1953 IIF still looks like new and my 1966 M4 is not at all bad. Hopefully today is M day.

Wilson,

Maybe a classic chrome finish shows up at the end...

Yes, I've seen it in person and didn't like it.

For what it's worth, my London dealer has told me that he's already had a couple of grey M9 bodies returned because of the "paint coming off".

This may be the reason why the Leica Rep at the recent Cambrian Photography Leica day commented that Leica is 'rethinking' the steel grey finish.

:D

I'm not in a hurry for the M9 (I haven't pre-ordered one) but if I had to buy one now, I will take the black the one.

There're a couple of issues that upset me with the M9:

First, the magenta cast on the left side of the picture with 18mm lenses on the M9 (Zeiss or Leica). The main interest for me of the M9 is the possibility of using 16 and 18 mm lenses as a 16 mm or 18 mm lens without magenta cast on the left side...

Second, the classical chrome finish because it's more durable, classical and prettier than the gray metal paint. If VW/Porsche makes a Porsche Turbo with a Golf GTI carrosserie, I won't buy because I love more the Porsche Turbo look (especially the doors knobs of the Porsche... -private joke) even if the only difference will be just the carrosserie.
