Leica x1 in black?

Hello,

Up to now I did not find any official mention of a black version of the X1 in the near future (still, the viewfinder and grip are both black). The historical relationship of this camera with the M8/M9 and even earlier camera models is being used in Leica’s marketing strategy, or so it seems to me as a new potential user.

So why then is there no black version yet? Are keeping the manufacturing costs down (Henry Ford comes to mind) or the targeted buyers group, the reason for this? Or maybe something else?

Also, would a optional black version not help Leica defining this new camera as a serious tool for photographers?

Any thoughts on this?

Regards, Herman

Ask your mate Henry or ask the staff at your local jewelry store

I suspect this has to do with them wanting to set themselves apart from all the manufacturers who tout their "pro" black finish on everything. I seem to recall a similar period of preoccupation with black finish on home electronics in the US, and now we're back to satin chrome again on high end gear, and gear with pretenses to "high end."

If you consider the way the appearance of this camera resembles the Barnack cameras, this, too could be an element which is intended. [Looks like a model I or Ic-Ig to me] Most of the screw-mount cameras were supplied standard in chrome from the model III [F] on [didn't seem to deter a lot of pros], and while black enamel was standard until model II [D], chrome was desirable, and extra--mainly because it was more expensive to produce. I suppose that, should the camera be a hit, we'll yet see it in Titanium with ostrich leather, or some other finishes, if that's important to folks. Meantime, black gaffer tape works.

Part of what draws me to the X1 is that it does take design cues from my IIIC. That the design team put that Leica DNA into it is what is charming. Then where is sits in the modernized digital Leica lineup, where the Minilux I have and love sits. A fun high quality, unassuming, non-intimidating camera, (for me and my subjects) is what I expect it to be.

We shall see but the signs are good.

Every time I see this black vs. chrome discussion, it reminds me that Ansel Adams painted all his camera cases white so they would not absorb extra heat. So I would think of all things digital cameras should be light colored so they could stay as cool as possible. Why attract more heat with black everything? Just black wrap or black gaffer a reflective area if needed. And what ever made black=professional?
