Artisan & Artist bags

Hello,

I'm thinking of getting either the Evans Walker or the Oskar's One Day Bag. I have (or hopefully soon will have) an M9, 90cronAA, 50lux pre asph and 28elmarit.

Although I like the flap of the Oskar's One Day Bag I'm tending towards the Evans Walker because it's smaller and has a zip which must be good for weather protection & anti-theft.

Anyone here using either of these bags ? Would they hold my kit along with a spare battery, couple of SD cards, and a few odds & ends ?

If owners could post pictures & comments that would be great. Also does anyone know if they are available in Europe or just at photovillage.com ?

many thanks,

Ian

My experience is limited to the Artisan & Artist 'Penn's Pad & Pencil Satchel'. No problem with one body (Leica M, R or Canon 5D) and 3 Leica M or R lenses up to 135mm. There is one pocket for lens caps, memory cards/films and batteries, and a second pocket for a wallet and a passport. Remains a small bag, very handy. Hardly waterproof though.

On a little side note, Photo Village (apparently) is the US dealer for Artisan & Artist bags (Artisan & Artist*) , which are made in Japan. A strange thing though is that they also have a link from their website to the Japanese manufacturer's site. When you go to that site there's a big red customer notice on the front page that says:

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL OUR CUSTOMERS: Please, be advised that Artisan & Artist* is not the official website of Artisan & Artist Co., Ltd. It belongs to our former US distributor. Please contact us for a complete list of authorized distributors and dealers info@aaa1.co.jp

What's up with that? They're saying that Photo Village is the former distributor?

I have a Walker Evans. Seen here with a Digilux 2 and an MP with Nokton 40. The side pocket currently has a Ziess lens cleaning kit, note book and 4 rolls of film in it. There is a slim full length pocket on the other side too. As a day bag it is roomy but not too big and cumbersome.

The only drawback is the zip, not totally waterproof, but, you can fix that by dripping candle wax along the length of the closed zip and then opening and closing a couple of times to work it into the teeth. I got mine from the London Artisan & Artist shop but they closed a couple of years ago.

My understanding is that Photo Village was the former US distributor, but they still have some stock. A google search should lead you to the current distributor.

The bag names used by Photo Village are also not used by Artisan & Artist themselves, instead they use a numbering system to distinguish the bags.

The bags are available in a number of European countries, e.g. France, Germany and Switzerland. Again, hopefully, a search might give you what you want.

Regardless which bag you choose, I think a flap has better weather protection than a zipper. And, with a flap, you can carry the bag with the flap facing in against your body, thereby increasing security.

But, very much personal preference. I have a bag with a flap (different brand), but don't carry it when out shooting.

I have the Oskar's One Day Bag and I am happy with that. Note it does use velcro for the flap which some people do not like. It carries M8 & 3 lenses easily, at a pinch I can include my M2 and a 4th lens but this is not optimal.

AFAIK it is totally waterproof. It however does not look expensive (anymore) which is a good thing to keep the thieves at bay.

Another vote for the Evans Walker. I either carry one M body & three lenses (four at a pinch) or two M bodies with lenses attached.

The pockets on the side are good for notebooks, light meters, film (remember that?) lens cleaning stuff, etc.

I have had mine out in light rain and my gear has stayed dry. If the rain was any heavier, I would be unlikely to be out shooting anyway.

Is anyone using, or does anyone have experience with the Artisan and Artist bag called the Reporters Satchel (GCAM 7000)? I have never seen one but it looks like it could be an attractive alternative to some of the other A&A bags mentioned.

Not sure I like any of the bags on thier site but there again I am biased. I really like my Billingham 225 which holds 2 x M6 bodies- 3 x Lenses- 1 Gossen Spotmeter- i Flash gun- up to 8 rolls of film in the 2 front flapped pockets- a full length zipped compartment for other bits and a full length rear pocket for a writing pad. I couldn't resist the second image by the way

Same colour... and smell? :D;)

Funny you should say that. I have a friend who had an extensive Pentax 6 X 7 system with a variety of prisms lenses and ancillary bits and all the time I knew him he carried all his camera stuff in 2 Leeds Camera Centre plastic bags returning to the shop when the bags gave out for new ones. He has lived in Austria for quite a few years now but I bet his mode of luggage has not changed significantly apart from the fact that Leeds Camera Centre are no more but I am sure he has sorted out another bag supplier

A & A are fine bags ideal for Leica RF equipment. The silk neck strap is the best I have ever used as it is soft and does not irritate and has bounce that cushions camera movement. Classic camera London now show quite a varied range of A & A on their website .Its good to have a UK stockist as in the past I had to order from Photo Village in New York with all the additional transatlantic shipping costs involved The Classic Camera Ltd

Not sure about the silk straps. Reminds me my climbing days when we used to use 6mm kernmantle which incidentally works well and is about 99.95% less expensive than the silk option you mention. I do like the Nikon plain aubergine strap that they used to offer to with F3 cameras. Classic Camera are persona non grata according to some on this forum by the way albeit, they are fine in my book.

I have one (Sabastio's Reporters Satchel) and it's a very nice bag. At first I thought it was too nice, as the front flap is black leather and a bit fancier than I was expecting. But I've grown to really like the bag over the past year.

Although I don't use it much for shooting, it comes with me everyday to work as a combination camerabag/briefcase. It holds an MP with mounted 35/2 Summicron and an M3 with mounted 50/2.8 Elmar. The third section holds a 50/1.4 Summilux, a 90/4 Elmar-M, and an MC-4 meter. The back pockets hold a notebook an pens, cell phone, and business papers.

The long, narrow mesh zippered-pocket that is located under the flap holds a Leica 1.25x VF magnifier, spare batteries for both the MP and the MC-4 meter, lens cloths, and lens solution.

The front outside leather pocket holds a cable shutter release and a couple plastic bags for emergency protection in case of a downpour. And the front pockets that sit under the front flap when it's down suualy carry several rolls of film.

Thanks for posting the description and photos of the Sabastio's Reporters Satchel. I had guessed that bag might present an attractive alternative to some of the other A&A bags mentioned. Your description and photos indeed indicate that the bag, while fairly small, can handle a pretty decent sized kit.

I have the Sebastio for two bodies+ lenses, third lens, flash, etc. ... just for transport really, it is a lot bigger than I was expecting. I have a little Billingham Digital for one body that I mostly use. A&A and Billingham quality is similar I think.

I still don't know what's better, flap or zipper.

To the poster who was bothered, Velcro closures can be partially or wholly eliminated with little opposing pieces of Velcro.
