arthury Posted October 15, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) FYI: It seems like there is a 4-5 weeks backlog in the NJ service center. If you are planning to send anything in, you might want to hold off until this clears a little or your "loved ones" will just be sitting in line for that much longer. Advertisement Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Hi arthury, Take a look here Leica USA Service: badly backlogged. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest EarlBurrellPhoto Posted October 15, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 15, 2009 Wonder why that is? Perhaps people deciding to get all the little bugs in their M8s sorted that they've been living with, whilst the camera is still in warranty and in anticipation of selling them. jplomley Posted October 15, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 15, 2009 Lenses requiring 6-bit coding are also being sent to Germany, but surprisingly, focus shift adjustments are being done in NJ.
derek_stanton Posted October 15, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 15, 2009 At this point, all Film Ms are now being sent to Germany for repair. Not "all" of them. Leica NJ just told me they no longer support one of their film models, that i bought NEW only three years ago. This, combined with my 5 month ordeal trying to get a lemon 50-ASPH repaired means i will never buy another Leica product. Heck, Contax has been Out Of Business for quite a while, but were still provisions made for ToCAD to service those products for another ten years. noah_addis Posted October 15, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 15, 2009 Not "all" of them. Leica NJ just told me they no longer support one of their film models, that i bought NEW only three years ago.... That's troubling. Which camera was it?
John Maio Posted October 15, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) At this point, all Film Ms are now being sent to Germany for repair. My M7 was sent to Solms because the "Auto" exposure function stopped working and to have the contact-type Dx sensor replaced with an optical one. They said 3 - 6 weeks. Its been 3 weeks now and not a word. Sad
mat_mcdermott Posted October 15, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 15, 2009 Communication from NJ service is not one its strengths, but FWIW the only time I've sent something in I was told one estimate and my camera returned well in advance, with no new estimate given to me or additional information when I called to enquire. Maybe you'll be lucky.

Really? I have always thot that 6-bit coding was done in NJ? Do you have reliable source for this? I am a little surprised why such a simple workflow to replace the metal plate cannot be done in NJ. nhabedi Posted October 15, 2009 Share #13 Posted October 15, 2009 Leica NJ just told me they no longer support one of their film models, that i bought NEW only three years ago. I can't believe that. AFAIK Leica will service every camera they ever made, no matter how old. Which model are you talking about and what exactly does "no longer support" mean? glenerrolrd Posted October 16, 2009 Share #15 Posted October 16, 2009 The reason that some lens go to Solms for 6 bit is because their mounts are not inter changeable. On most lenses they remove your mount and replace it with an already machined exchange mount. This is a very simple repair with the correct part. On the 50SX,75SX and 50NX....the mounts may vary and are often individually adjusted on each lens. They found that exchanging mounts often required re calibration so they decided after the 1st rush of 6bit coding to send certain lenses to Solms for 6bit. This is why a 35summicron can come back in 2 weeks and a 50/1.4asph can take a few months. The other issue in the early 6bit coding was the question of CLA . Both my Noctiulux and the 75SX were over 20years old and had to visit Solms for a CLA to allow for 6bit. Expensive but they rebuilt my Noctilux including getting a scratch off the front element (they did it but who cares its fixed). I would expect that the M9 has drawn in another group of Leica M photographers with legacy lenses. I have several friends that are just sitting on their 28cron and 35lux from the film days and will now want to get them coded. Generally NJ turns around things in between 4-6 weeks ...they never consider shipping time which adds a week on the front and another on the back . Same is true with Solms add a month So I use 6 weeks for NJ and 3 months for Solms as my estimates and this saves my blood pressure. As a comparison my turn around with Nikon has been about a month on a lens and a body.
Scargo Posted October 16, 2009 Share #16 Posted October 16, 2009 I sent My M8 in 3 weeks ago on a friday, Leica NJ received my camera on Monday and the following Tue, the camera was fixed and sent out second day. I was told repair time is 3 weeks, but it was fixed in 8 days. That is fast in my opinion.

noah_addis Posted October 17, 2009 Share #18 Posted October 17, 2009 Wow, how much more did you pay them to increase the speed? And, you created this new Forum account just to tell us this? I also sent my M8 in for a new shutter--the old one completely self-destructed. Granted, it was a week or two before 09/09, but mine was also fixed in about a week. They replaced the shutter and checked the camera over. It was fixed for free under warranty, no rush fees. I will say that communication there is sorely lacking. I called a few times to see when the camera would be finished (I wanted it back so I could sell it!). I was unable to get a solid time estimate. Even the very day it arrived at my house I had tried to call to get an estimate and they couldn't tell me when it was going to be done! But overall they seem to be quite fast. Where did you hear that they're 'badly backlogged'?

rsh Posted October 17, 2009 Share #20 Posted October 17, 2009 Sherry will repair Film Ms, and her work is terrific, if not better than the work once done by NJ. I have used her exclusively for the past few years unless it was a warranty issue.
