Advertisement Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Hi nunnzzzz, Take a look here Petition for demanding Leica a real chrome M9, not painted. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jlancasterd Posted October 15, 2009 Share #62 Posted October 15, 2009 . Have any of you bashing the grey seen it in person, as in held it in your hands? Just curious. Steve I've seen, and held, a steel grey M9, and I much prefer my black paint M9.
jlancasterd Posted October 15, 2009 Share #63 Posted October 15, 2009 Yes, I've seen it in person and didn't like it. For what it's worth, my London dealer has told me that he's already had a couple of grey M9 bodies returned because of the "paint coming off". This may be the reason why the Leica Rep at the recent Cambrian Photography Leica day commented that Leica is 'rethinking' the steel grey finish. ArtZ Posted October 15, 2009 Author Share #64 Posted October 15, 2009 Right. I was trying to say that there is no need for a petition and for "demanding" something from them. Leica has offered us for decades a classical chrome finish on M bodies. Now, for a reason I don't know, Leica offers a steel gray paint instead. Far enough for a petition demanding the classical chrome finish. I also agree the original black chrome M8 looked cheap, especially when you sit an M8.2 or M9 next to it. The BP M8.2 seemed a bit shinier but I loved it with the black dot. The M9 BP is very nice as is the grey. Have any of you bashing the grey seen it in person, as in held it in your hands? Just curious. Steve I saw one last week and didn't like it. The gray paint had already a few light scratches. It seems very fragil.
Rolo Posted October 15, 2009 Share #65 Posted October 15, 2009 Have any of you bashing the grey seen it in person, as in held it in your hands? Just curious. Steve Me not bashing, just proclaiming my position. Don't need to see any grey cars that I don't want either, but silver is usually very nice. Leica has conciously decided against a chrome version, whether you like that or not. Why would a petition change that?
BerndReini Posted October 15, 2009 Share #67 Posted October 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have seen and held both versions of the M9. I own the black one, but I have to say, the gray is gorgeous, maybe even prettier than my silver M7. The gray paint has a pearl finish and sheen to it that does not come across in most photographs I've seen of it.

dpattinson Posted October 15, 2009 Share #70 Posted October 15, 2009 Will you still want it if it costs £500 more to have it in Chrome?
marknorton Posted October 15, 2009 Share #71 Posted October 15, 2009 I actually quite like the appearance of the black M9, my concern remains how long is it going to staay like that. I would certainly have liked the opportunity to buy a chrome M9. Hopefully, they will see the error of their ways for the M10.
GMB Posted October 15, 2009 Share #72 Posted October 15, 2009 I am holding out buying an M9 until there is a Chrome version with Sapphire glass Fair enough -- in the meantime I'll take pictures with my M9 (when delivered). I look forward to see your saphire glass shots -- I wonder how they will hold up against the once I’ll take with the 50 lux ASP Frankly, the factor that affects the value of my black M8 are not the scratches on the screen but the appearance of the M9 (same is true for my M8.2, where a bit of paint wore off at one edge). And the factor that will determine the long-term value of the M9 will be how it is going to hold up against the competition -- and of course what improvements the M10 will bring and at what price Of course, if we are only talking out about personal preferences as regards the esthetics, then there goes the old saying that personal taste is beyond debate (at least as long as it is within certain limits) Cheers and good luck waiting for the chrome! Craftsman Posted October 15, 2009 Share #74 Posted October 15, 2009 You do not get the point. Leica has conciously decided against a chrome version, whether you like that or not. Why would a petition change that? Simply because WE are the customers. WE keep this company in business with our purchases. Leica doesn't make camera decisions in a vacuum. It better be customer driven or they won't be long for the market place. It's you that don't get the point.

The BP M8.2 seemed a bit shinier but I loved it with the black dot. The M9 BP is very nice as is the grey. Have any of you bashing the grey seen it in person, as in held it in your hands? Just curious. i did today and have to admit the steel grey looked quite nice, reminiscent of the titanium. however (if i may be a girl here), my old chrome Cron looked slightly out of place on it. if i was an owner of several chrome lenses, i'd be pissed. i also imagine it would look pretty dingy with paint chips so i think Leica needs to go back to chrome or, if they really want to make drool, give me real titanium like the Jahre. i also wish they'd go back to the black paint finish of the M8.2. the M9 looks very similar to the classic M8 (i put them side to side) and i imagine it will wear the same -- i.e., not as quickly but not as nicely as the BP M8.2. can we start a petition for that as well? -- cam

So why on earth would they wear the same? i apologise that i am not as anal (perhaps because i can't afford an M9) -- this was simply on sight and feel. i did not investigate actual materials used. my bad. i still prefer black paint. sue me. michali Posted October 15, 2009 Share #80 Posted October 15, 2009 The gray one will be embraced and become a classic. Some people always resist new design choices. I fully agree with you! I wonder how many posters to this thread have actually seen a grey M9 in the flesh? Don't shoot me down in flames, I'm asking a perfectly valid question......... My dealer had a black & grey for me to choose in the store, chose the grey it's great, I love it! My 1939 Leica Standard is chrome, 1951 Leica 111f is chrome, 1954 M3 is chrome, both M8 & M8.2 are black, time for a change. All of these threads illustrate that you can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time. Whatever decision Leica makes they are always screwed by this lot. If Leica had offered chrome and sapphire glass etc. and let's say the price was an extra EURO500.00 we would have seen a bunch of vitriolic screaming threads about how we're being ripped off! Given the current global economic climate, IMO Leica made some smart strategic marketing decisions in order to keep the M9 price down and therefore make it more widely available. This is borne out by the fact that demand for the M9 exceeds supply by a fairly wide margin, if one reads through the threads in this Forum. I congratulate them for having the cojones and belief in their product to launch the M9 in these times. Reminds me of a friend's comment: " Depressions, recessions, wars come and go, Leica is always there". The other thing these threads illustrate, is that now that we've got a FF range finder and now that Leica has listened to us and taken on board many of our gripes about the M8 and incorporated some of the changes we asked for into the M9, all we can now do is complain endlessly about colours and finishes. In my mind this proves that there can't be too much wrong with the camera! I've been using my M9 for just over a month and in some fairly harsh shooting conditions; verdict is that it's an amazing piece of equipment, no matter the color! Welcome, dear visitor!
