Advertisement Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Hi jamriman, Take a look here Petition for demanding Leica a real chrome M9, not painted. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

jlancasterd Posted October 14, 2009 Share #43 Posted October 14, 2009 Hi Lucien, would you expect it to be more resistant than black chrome really? Having had an M6 with black chrome finish which began to wear on the corners after only a few months of relatively light use, I'm not sure that black chrome wears any better than (or as well as) properly applied, stoved, black paint. At least the paint is applied over brass on the M9, rather than the grey zinc alloy used for the top plates of M6s, which looks awful when it begins to show. GMB Posted October 14, 2009 Share #44 Posted October 14, 2009 Amazing thread. Assume Leica provides a chrome body in a few months, how many of you who demand a chrome now are going to sell your black or grey at a loss to "upgrade" to chrome? I like the grey BTW. garyp Posted October 14, 2009 Share #45 Posted October 14, 2009 is it anthracite like the R9 or a different finish?
carstenw Posted October 14, 2009 Share #46 Posted October 14, 2009 The M9 finishes are the same as the R9.
hutch Posted October 14, 2009 Share #47 Posted October 14, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I shoot landscapes. The durability of chrome is preferred more than blending into a crowd with black paint. I would gladly pay more to cover the extra expense to Leica. Leicaiste Posted October 14, 2009 Share #48 Posted October 14, 2009 Hi Lucien, would you expect it to be more resistant than black chrome really? The black chrome on the M8 as I wrote it before doesn't age very well. It is becoming grayish unevenly, like on the black chrome M cameras before. If I have to choose between a well used M4 black paint and a black chrome M4-P in the same condition, I will choose the M4. The black chrome can become really ugly on an heavily used camera IMO. The black paint may show more blemish, but still looks nicer. And the new black paint on the M9 looks more like the old black paint Leica M, and strangely enough is very similar to the black chrome finish of the current lenses. Less shiny than on the M6 TTL millennium, MP and M8.2. That black paint on the M9 looks like the black chrome should have always looked. carstenw Posted October 14, 2009 Share #49 Posted October 14, 2009 The paint finishes of the M9 are apparently *much* more durable than the black paint lacquer on an M8. I don't know if it will end up looking like black lacquer or black chrome when worn, though.
Jager Posted October 14, 2009 Share #50 Posted October 14, 2009 Amazing thread. Assume Leica provides a chrome body in a few months, how many of you who demand a chrome now are going to sell your black or grey at a loss to "upgrade" to chrome? I like the grey BTW. +1. I certainly would prefer a true silver chrome, a la my M6, M7, and M8. But as I hope/expect/pray that I'll have my M9 long before Leica could ever make the decision to offer a silver chrome model, and then ramp up production for it, I'll end up keeping the painted version that I hope to get soon. In any case, Leica certainly has little reason to consider such a new model until initial demand for the current M9 models is satisfied. 'taint going to happen anytime soon... vertekijker Posted October 14, 2009 Share #51 Posted October 14, 2009 +1 just like the chrome M8, but with the rougher leather of the black M9. ------------ Frans
lct Posted October 15, 2009 Share #52 Posted October 15, 2009 The white paint of my 30 yo M4-2 is worn out but its black chrome resists fairly well so far. Didn't use it for 6 or 7 years though.
ArtZ Posted October 15, 2009 Author Share #53 Posted October 15, 2009 Chrome lenses are heavier than black lenses. A chrome M8 feels heavier than a black chrome M8 (though I never weighed them). I think this has something to do with the metal alloy used depending on the finish. Personally, I like that extra weight, I feel the camera and the lenses more sturdy. guidomo Posted October 15, 2009 Share #54 Posted October 15, 2009 Don't you think Leica knows that some people would have preferred a chrome version?
carstenw Posted October 15, 2009 Share #55 Posted October 15, 2009 The chrome lenses are made with brass for the outer layers instead of aluminium alloy. That is what makes them heavier. The cameras all use brass though, and all weigh the same.
carstenw Posted October 15, 2009 Share #56 Posted October 15, 2009 Don't you think Leica knows that some people would have preferred a chrome version? Of course they do. My feeling is still that they did it to keep the M9 price reasonable. At only €1500 more than an M8.2 they achieved that. However, we lost the chrome editions and the sapphire glass. I was trying to say that there is no need for a petition and for "demanding" something from them.

stevem7 Posted October 15, 2009 Share #59 Posted October 15, 2009 I don't agree. IMO it is the black chrome on the M8 which look cheap and don't age very well. The black paint on the M9 is very nice, better than on the "shiny" M8.2. Lucien I also agree the original black chrome M8 looked cheap, especially when you sit an M8.2 or M9 next to it. The BP M8.2 seemed a bit shinier but I loved it with the black dot. The M9 BP is very nice as is the grey. Have any of you bashing the grey seen it in person, as in held it in your hands? Just curious. Steve
wattsy Posted October 15, 2009 Share #60 Posted October 15, 2009 Have any of you bashing the grey seen it in person, as in held it in your hands? Just curious. Yes, I've seen it in person and didn't like it. For what it's worth, my London dealer has told me that he's already had a couple of grey M9 bodies returned because of the "paint coming off".
