I come to a very interesting Leica R test reports by

Jose Manuel Serrano Esparza LHSA.

elrectanguloenlamano: LEICA: A MAGICAL WORD WITH GREAT FUTURE (2nd Part)

As I am a lover of the the Leica R equipment, I liked his opinion and his reports Hope you enjoy it as I did.

But the great future, well that depands on Leica.

Ken.

While enjoying the article, it was written in July, 2008, and I'm afraid that the author's hopes and dreams for the R at the 2008 Photokina have left him disappointed, as the R system seems to have come to a sad end. It's certainly and always will be a tremendous tool, but I think Leica has it's sights going in completely different directions.

Why don't we make a proposal to Leica?

Who is interested in an digital SLR fully compatible with R lenses post here a statement:

"Dear Leica AG company,

If this respectable company will develop a DSRL fully compatible with R lenses and costing less than 4500 Euros, I will place immediately an order,

sincerely yours,

-signature-".

You can think it is childish, but why dont try?

Fernando.

  • 1 year later...

System is dead, just not burried yet according to Leica.

I no longer trust them. They know how to make a camera. They know how to add digital.

They have the sensors and the processors. Build the camera.

Users have been buying manual focus R for decades when AF was available and it works for many photos. That is a poor excuse IMHO.

I have a feeling it would not cost that little. For example, look at the cost of the M9. Why would a digital R be less than that?

When Leica gets around to developing the full frame digital R system (and new lenses to go with it,) I'll be looking to upgrading my R lenses for my R9. And then the same thing will happen to digital R users that's already happened to M9 users. They will start looking back at their older bodies and start using film again.

And for those who stay with the digital Rs, they will continue to use and buy new R lenses that Leica will upgrade in design.

Leica builds an SLR body. It costs €16,500.

Take out the AF and substitute a smaller sensor, and it would cost €12,500. Put back in the fiddly levers to meter/stop down with R lenses, and it will cost €13,000.

Where is the other €8,500 in price reductions going to come from? Dr. Kaufmann's generous gift to each and every R user?

That is pretty much what happened with the R system over the last 10 years of its life (if not before) - it sucked money out of the company owner's wallet. It bled Leica almost to death.

You want an R-mount DSLR from Leica? Persuade them you will be PROFITABLE for them. An offer of €4,500 probably leaves them rolling on the floor laughing.

"Boy, Rolexes are nice. Why - I'd pay $1,000 for one!" Try it with Amazon and see how it works out: http://www.amazon.com/Rolex-Precision-Submariner-Chronometer-Stainless/dp/B001115D9K ;)

Man that's ugly, along with most Rolexes. I wouldn't even pay $20 for it.

I do remember reading stories about how high the R8 and R9 costs and low (maybe even slow) R sales was really hard on the company. Also I think the market for digital SLRs was taken up by Canon and Nikon with their auto focus and other bells and whistles. I think a large majority of people were asking, why should I get a manual camera when this one can auto focus.

Maybe it's wishful thinking, however I think there is a segment of people who are dissatisfied with digital SLRs and wanting to return to a camera system that's more like shooting film (more like a manual camera with manual focus etc) no matter if it's film or digital. I like manual focusing better anyway.

I'm reading more and more stories on how some have bought a M8 or M9, and now have gone back (or went out and bought) a M6 or M7 to go along with their digital equipment.

As Panasonic and Leica are working together on some digital cameras, why not Panasonic making a box or body with a digital sensor (preferably full frame) with the R bayonet mount and correct register. Leica could collect royalties as my guess is that patents on the mount have not yet run out and we Leica R users have our digital camera.

This has been attempted. See Petition for a Leica R10

It did not seem to do much of an impression on the management of Leica.

I'm sorry to say it, but there is not coming any FF DSLR from Leica.

We, who wanted a camera like this one, have to look to other brands.

How much real engineering do you think it would take to put an R mount on a V-lux?

Forget auto-focus - no real L user wants auto-focus anyway and the R lenses don't

accomplish that anyway - a little software for auto-exposure, and sell it for double or

triple the price of the existing offering. Not a full frame - so what, suck it up and learn

to adapt. Not a "real" Leica - you mean like a D-lux? You want to use your R lens or

not? You want to be able to get pictures or not? Or how about a lens adapter for the

S system that only uses a portion of the sensor with R lenses? Too expensive? Wait until Leica abandons the S and buy one used. How about a X body with an R mount -

might look as unbalanced as a Sony NEX, but firmware doesn't take any space.

Or better yet - use the R as designed and scan your film if you really want digital.

But then there wouldn't be any newly designed R lenses like they have for the M system.

I think what will happen is Leica will take from what they've learned from their S system and apply it to the new digital R system.

That as the whole idea of Project AFRika. (Do a search)

The market for a digital R is too small for the investment to make any return so it was canned. Those above calling for all sorts of kludges to V-Luxes etc must be aware that R lenses can already be used very successfully on three different _full frame_ dSLRs.

There are already dozens of threads on this subject

I love a good fairy story. There are some great flights of fancy here. I loved my R7 and glass, but I moved on. Everything has a time, and the R system's time has passed. Celebrate what it was, but be realistic, eh?

Bill
