Anyone using the 28/2 Ultron?

Had one, it had focus shift when stopping down. My copy wasn't that sharp, not as sharp as the Leica 28 f/2.8 ASPH Elmarit I have. Much bigger then the Elmarit. Because of those things I rarely used it so it got sold.

For the price it isn't a bad lens but it is not a Leica lens.

Time to save some money!

I have most of the Summicrons, except the 28mm unfortunately. The new Voigtlander 28/2 is at a fraction of the Summicron's price. But I have not seen any reviews about it.

I would be most pleased to hear user comments.

Stephen;

I think Steve Huff (stevehuffphotos.com?) did some good looking and posting about it. In the end he was not that impressed; but google for him and his website, or search through here.

Apologies for not giving you more pointers; but I'm time limited right now; anyway, steve's page convinced me to get the Leica 28/2; a lot of money for me, but it really is a fantastic lens... All my others are CV lenses, so I'm not against CV in anyway.

There have been several posts on this lens - search the threads. Having said that, the ultron 28 2.0 is my only non-leica lens. I bought it "last minute" when my 35 cron was in the shop and I needed a semi wide for a shoot in the mideast. I have found it, contrary to the findings of some, to be a very sharp lens, with great tonal range, little to no focus shift, and a steal for the money. I use it on my m8, with sharpie coding. There are a number of pics with it which I posted in the people section. Try a copy in the shop before you buy it - there is variation in the lots.. but if you get a good one - you'll love it and have money left over for something else. Best. Coos

I got one to replace my older f/1.9 but after using them together I sent the f/2 back for a refund. The f/1.9 has no focus shift, and perhaps it was a sample variation, but was also quite a bit sharper off-axis.

I have the older version, 28mm/f1.9. Nice lens, sharp but looks after 2 years already as if it survived a few wars.

The older aspherical version is more prone to flare

I never had any flare with mine, but maybe because I binned the useless clot of a hood that comes with, and replaced it with a 46mm threaded hood from Heavystar. The hood is designated for a 35mm lens, and although it doesn't vignette on an M8 I'm not sure about an M9.

Thanks to everyone.

It seems that I have to try before buying. But the only way I can get one is from internet, possibly from Cameraquest. So there's no possibilty of trying samples before buying.

Maybe I should wait a little while more to buy the Summicron 28mm. It seems to be the favorite lens of may photographers.

As with any lens, its worth doing the research before spending your money. The 28 Summicron, if one can afford it, is a lens I can recommend without reservation.

Well, setting aside those who stand on principle not to use anything but Leica glass, and those who judge the quality of a lens by its price tag, and those who judge the quality of a lens by MTF graphs and/or the word of others, the ratio of Summicron-over-Ultron preference looses much of its steepness.

In point of fact, from f/2.8 the Ultron, Summicron, and the last 3 generations of Elmarit not to mention the Konica M-Hexanon and Zeiss offerings, are remarkably close even in controlled testing, let alone when fettered by the variables of photography in the field. Where the Summicron pulls ahead cleanly is only when wide open. Then too, practically-speaking it would be an advantage only in shots where overall contrast and corner performance are critical, such as interior shots and landscapes (one might shoot those @ f/2 when shooting handheld in lower light levels). For reportage, the difference might either be unimportant, or the Ultron's signature might even be enhancing.

My solution to the 28mm problem was to buy (used) both the VC 28/1.9 and the VC 28/3.5. I use the 28/1.9 lens for available light, and the (now discontinued) 28/3.5 outdoors. Total cost, used, about 1/4 of the 28 Summicron. No focus shift on the fast lens, superb quality and no flare on the slower lens.

If I had unlimited disposable income, or if 28mm was my primary focal length on the M8, I probably would have sprung for the Summicron. Since 35mm is my go-to lens on the M8, the VCs are fine for 28mm.

Yes, sure; my Summicron 28 was my first Leica lens; purchased for the speed. My CV 25 is great, but slow; the CV 40/1.4SC I was not happy with at anything less than f2-f2.8 so I sold it.

So if you want that combination of speed, clarity, and shallow DOF, the Summicron 28/2 is great.

I still have the CV25/4 btw; it is a bit smaller and lighter than the Summicron; great for general travelling about, but I really like that shallow DOF that the Summicron gives!
