volk65 Posted February 20, 2014 Share #10 Posted February 20, 2014 Amazing set! I assume you took these pics from under a shelter. I would be very much worried about the lack of weather sealing, possibility of fungus from humidity, and of course the snow drops forming on the front glass of the lens. A miller Posted February 20, 2014 Author Share #11 Posted February 20, 2014 Amazing set! I assume you took these pics from under a shelter. I would be very much worried about the lack of weather sealing, possibility of fungus from humidity, and of course the snow drops forming on the front glass of the lens. A sincere thanks to all who have view this series and have taken the time to comment. Dear Volk - I had my camera tucked in my coat when not shooting; but much of the time I was indeed shooting and the camera got wet. In fact, at one point, I had to go into a nearby bank every 10 minutes or so to dry off the wet snow, gently wipe the lens with some pure cotton QTips that I brought, and let my fingers thaw out (they are purple and I couldn't feel the shutter). This is the 6th serious blizzard that I have shot in the past two years. I used an M9 (for last year's blizzard) and an M3 and MM for this year's blizzards. Each has gotten quite wet and each survived unscathed. After each shoot, I was very careful to thoroughly wipe down the camera and lens with newly cleaned cloth and cotton q-tips - like a solidier would wipe down and clean his gun after an operation. The one hiccup this year was that my viewfinder of my MM got fogged up once I brought it indoors for good. That concerned me for only a couple of minutes until I noticed the fog disappating. The obvious and understandable reason for the fog was that I was bringing my camera back and forth from inside (where it was nice and warm) to outside (where it was well below freezing (below 20F). This is normal and I quickly stopped fretting. My feeling is that these cameras are so well constructed that they are able to withstand the elements of nature pretty well. Obviously, this has its limits and one should take care to not keep the camera directly exposed to heavy rain for more than a couple of minutes at a time. But even with the weathersealing aspect of the M(240), the lenses are not weathersealed and so there is still exposure. The main upside of taking cover is that you will minimize getting water drops on your lens, which will minimize those careful wipes on the lens (which I really hate to do!).
