Paul, I'd love to hear about your first weeks with the M9. I'm also considering selling all my Nikon stuff to buy an M9 instead.

Congratulations. You will not regret the decision. Just be patient with the camera, and it will be a rewarding journey. My advice is after the initial playing around with the new toys, stick with one lens for at least a month in order to really learn the focal length. Also, turn the focus to infinity after every shot, so you always focus in the same direction and don't get stuck going back and forth. This will make focusing incredibly fast.

First time I see this most smart piece of advice which makes a lot of sense. Thanks.

I do this and it really works... excellent advice.

Hi Paul,

Feels great right ?

One of those decissions which seems to be very important in life, don't forget your wedding day still.....

To give you an idea, and for people who are thinking about the move you make...

I was a long time Nikon user, love still my 1963 Nikon F, had Nikkormats, D70s, D200, D300 and finally D700 with those wonderfull lenses AF-D.

Than 2006 there was the M8, bought one, had a 24/2.8, 35/2.0, 75/1.4 and yep a Noct 50/1.0...... than Canon came with it's C5DmkII....still in my opnion one of the best camera's around and with 21mp it more than you need...

And...so I sold all my Nikon Stuff and M8 (and my M6TTL)....had a lot of $$$ and did buy a 5DmkII with 4 Carl Zeiss ZE lenses (18/3.5-21/2.8-35/2.0-50/2.0Makro and the unbelieveable 100/2.0Makro...

All because the 5D is, beside a foto-champ, also a phenomenon on Movie making.

Almost every big-shot in Hollywood is using 2day 5D or 7D for making movies and even Commercials are shot with it and TV series..

And by the way, with Zeiss glas you're on the same level as Leica glas, colour redering etc,,,and the MF is beautiful for photography and follow-focus movie making

I'd buy a prof 3-pod, a follow focus rig from red`rock, a mattebox and many more

and than I found out the expensive way...that I am not a movie maker, I love the thechnology and to watch Movies and the technology used

Look one day at Barry Lyndon (1975 from David Lynch) all shot with special produced

Carl Zeiss Primes with a speed of 0,7 !!!!! maken it look like moving painting.

So finally I sold everything and returned to the simplicity of Range Finder Photography.

Digital recording, but almost everything else classical.

Coming from a C5DmkII or a D700...the M9 is is technically not up to those 2.

But the M9 is for picture Quality (18mp is enough and IQ is not everything) ok and

everyday I am surprised by the quality right out of the camera using RAW compressed, almost no post-processing in LR3.

But the most important thing is...... I carry it most of the time with me in my shoulderbag, together with my wallet, iPhone and Sunglasses, and sometimes I forget that I have my M9 with me....

Together with a 21/2.8 pre-asph from 1991, a Zeiss 35/2.0, a 75/2.5 Summarit and a 30 year old 90/2.8 tele-elmarit (220 gram) and this week I decide for a Zeiss 50/2.0 Planar or a Zeiss 50/1.5 C Sonnar...

I love the rendering and colour of the Zeiss glas and together with teh M9 it's a world class combination.

So Paul, and others to decide, enjoy your coming M9 and shoot some pictures to make you smile

What excellent advice!

It's so obvious once you stated it.

Thanks,

Paul,

you won't regret the change. After 25 years of using a Nikon F3/T, with a number of what I thought were excellent Nikkor prime lenses, I changed over to Leica in recent months. Now I have an M9, 21 Lux, 35 Lux, 50 Lux, (75 Cron on order). The difference in my images is extraordinary, and I'm very happy with my range of lenses. I should have changed to Leica years ago!

Paul, I am happy for you because I know it's a good choice. I turned myself into Leica world about a year ago. Since then, Leica is my primary use. But I want to caution you that maybe you want to give a try starting with one body and one lens to see how it goes for the sake of financial protection. Rangefinder is different from SLR, you do not want to end up leaving it behind one day like you have done to Nikon. W

Paul, congratulations! I hope you do not have to wait too long for the M9.

Good advice has already been offered. May I add that at the end of a shoot, zero all controls to your normal default settings. Then you won't suddenly be caught out using extremely high ISO settings inadvertently in lighting which supports the lowest ISO for maximum quality.

It is also worth studying the 'User Profile' setting facility, often spurned by digital M-users, but a very useful option in my opinion. My basic two settings are named 'HiFi' (for highest quality work) and 'Fast' (for high ISO shooting). At the start of every fresh shoot, after switching the camera ON, I quickly set my desired User Profile. The interesting point to remember is that you can still modify your settings but that invalidates your chosen User Profile. That is why I habitually run through my pre-shooting drill. A total of four profiles can be stored if you so wish. Just a thought for you to consider.

After my visit to the Photokina, i made a choice to go for the black body instead of steelgrey. September 28 i could pick up my M9 (a week before i already picked up my Summilux 50).

I did not doubt my choice to go from Nikon D3 to Leica M9 for a second. The way i started working with the M9 is much more the way i did when i started with photography back in the late eighties (Praktica MTL3) and that is the way i feel comfortable with. The D3 had became a P&S to me, that was my fault, not the D3:D.

I did not change because of IQ issues, but just because i wanted to experience photography in a slow way. No hurry, no rush.

The handeling of the M9 is perfect to me, batterylife is shorter than is was used to, but that can be solved with some extra batteries. The LCD screen is not as good as the one on the D3, but i don't really care. I switched off the auto review mode, i prefer to see my "catch of the day" at home. Manual focusing feels good, love RF system!

I now travel light, obtrusive an i feel more involved in making a photograph then i felt over the last years. The Leica rangefinder has brought back the joy i less or more lost over the last years.

I'm not a pro, just an average photographer who love to make photographs of my travel and and of whatever comes my way. I don't use a DSLR for specific situations, i challenge myself to cope with those situations.

I mainly use the 50 Summilux on my M9, but i travel to Vienna next week so i think i will use my other lenses as well.

I don't regret my choice but i know that will always be a personal thing.

Thank you Leica for giving me back my joy on photography!
