Alnitak Posted February 2, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 2, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anyone using this combo? I am debating adding this lens to my kit, and would be interested in seeing how its working out for folks on the M9. The other option is the Leica 21/2.8, but the reviews seem to show the Zeiss giving better corner performance and a great drawing style at a fraction of the price. Photos? Jeff I had this lens for my M8 and after getting a WATE, made the mistake of selling it to a friend on the Forum. It is a truly excellent lens. There is a small amount of variation and some are fractionally better in the corners wide open than others but nothing like the variation in Leica 35 Luxes or any CV lens. The photos I took with it are now all archived but I will see if I can look one out later today. I would guess it is even better on the M9 (my WATE certainly is). Erwin Puts thinks very highly of this lens http://www.imx.nl/photo/zeiss/zeiss/page66.html . Very positive aperture stops and like all modern Zeiss lenses, silky smooth focusing (are you listening Leica?). I think you can order it now with a 28/90 bayonet rather than a 24/35. If you are going to hand code it as a 21 Elmarit, it needs the 28/90 bayonet to pick up the coding. You can get away without an external finder on the M8 by just peering around the outside edges of the VF but this would not work on an M9, so you will need an external finder. The Zeiss and Leica ones are very good but very pricey. I would be very tempted to go for the new CV zoom finder, as you can then use it with other lenses in the future. batmobile Posted February 2, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 2, 2010 The ZM is a higher contrast lens (not a huge increase). I do not use mine on digital, but the performance is truly superb in the corners and razor sharp on centre. Usefuly, it also takes 46mm filters too. biju49 Posted February 2, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 2, 2010 I asked exactly the same question a week ago (Jan.25th)!! Never got an answer here, It seems that nobody wants to share his/her experience with us.
exile Posted February 2, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 2, 2010 I've been looking at this lens for a long while. It will certainly be my choice for 21mm in a 21/35/75 setup. The only thing keeping me from buying today is that I don't have the money. Good luck with it.
wlaidlaw Posted February 2, 2010 Share #6 Posted February 2, 2010 I asked exactly the same question a week ago (Jan.25th)!! Never got an answer here, It seems that nobody wants to share his/her experience with us. Here is an example taken about 3 years ago in Barcelona and before I had got the hand coding to work on the B21 for the UV/IR filter. Wilson Welcome, dear visitor! tom in mpls Posted February 2, 2010 Share #7 Posted February 2, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I thought the issue on the M9 is color shifts at the outer edges due to the extreme angle of light on the outer pixels. I have also wondered if manually choosing 21mm from the menu, or coding for a Leica 21mm, would cure this.

Tom, The colour shift at the LHS edge on the M9, seems principally to affect the 2 wide Summiluxes. I just don't know if it affects the B21 at f2.8. Certainly it does not seem apparent on my f4 WATE. I have heard a rumour that it is not cured on a beta of the next firmware but I would hope a firmware cure is being worked on. Maybe that is what is holding up the next firmware, as the first beta came out months ago. Wilson
biju49 Posted February 2, 2010 Share #9 Posted February 2, 2010 You are totally right! Thats the reason why pictures taken with M8 do not help here. We are looking for examples with M9 ( without ConerFix adjustments).

biglouis Posted February 2, 2010 Share #12 Posted February 2, 2010 Am I the only one to see a color shift in the wooden floor, on the picture above? Can you explain? What exactly is colour shift because I'm not sure I can recognise it in the photographer. I'm also interested in the lens hence the question. wlaidlaw Posted February 2, 2010 Share #13 Posted February 2, 2010 Am I the only one to see a color shift in the wooden floor, on the picture above? If you read my accompanying note, you would see I was using the B21 as an uncoded lens with a UV/IR filter on an M8, so cyan corners highly likely. Also I did a bit of colour correction on my Sun 22 CRT which is behaving badly after being profiled with a Huey. I should have pulled the image across to the Lacie Electron Blue IV, on which the Huey did a much better job. Wilson
Bartie Posted February 2, 2010 Share #14 Posted February 2, 2010 I`ve just bought one of these and the results are fantastic on my M9,a little more contrasty than my Leica 35 summicron but still a very sharp lens. Andy

Andy Andy, any shots taken with this lens? Are you using it uncoded, manually coding it, or just setting the lens as something else on the M9's menu? Thanks, Jeff

Guest roey Posted February 3, 2010 Share #18 Posted February 3, 2010 I exchanged the lens flange with one made by John Milich with the proper recesses for coding and I have coded it as Elmarit 21/2.8 ASPH. I haven't noticed red edges with this lens (I have with others) and only mild vignetting. As others have said, the lens is very good, albeit a bit contrasty -- which I like for wide angle lenses.
