Here are a few shots of the first 30 x 40 inch print,CV 35 1,7,160 iso, Epson 9800,Crane Museo max paper

Looks like a 4x5 scan (maybe even better) !

Leica should run some of the Magnum guys through my studio (listening David) and quickly produce a show of these images, it will have photographers queing up in droves to buy !!

The image posted is not meant to be anything other than a quick technical example of print and lens/camera quality.

ALSO-

I forgot I had put on a polarizing filter and a shot I took last night that exhibited strong banding from the halogen lights had NONE. Be aware the refraction that you see in this pic is what I consider normal from any camera, the banding without the filter was what we have seen on this forum ie .strong horizontal or vertical bands running the length of the sensor

I have attached the no band file also

davida..

[ The image posted is not meant to be anything other than a quick technical example of print and lens/camera quality ]

ya.. so u want to show us the super quality of the print on the monitor over the inertent, and u want to show us a super performance of lens and sensor on tiny internet file ?????

another joke....

[ Looks like a 4x5 scan (maybe even better) ! ]

again... im full and blind... it is only me who cannot see how inferior is current 4x5 photography compared to small digital cameras in the hands of brand fanatics....

are u serious about this statement????

man... i have files from LEAF APTUS and IMACON/HASSELBLAD digi backs... they dont really look like 4x5" photogrpahy.. not even close to their richness and depth.... can u explain me what is my problem with my eyes that i see things wrongly...

small leica camera look like 4x5 print or even better ... my god...

first let leaf and hassleblad to aproach a bot closer to what one can see on 4x5, if they can reach it at all in near future or any time.... rite now, even 6x6 looks richer basically and with more depth that characterises a good slide film.

Yes I am serious - my business is high end scanning and printing.

In house we have scanners from Hell, Scitex and ICG and we daily scan film from 35mm to 8x10.

These files are superb I have tried to print this large from my D200 and it just does not hold up in this way and of course a jpegged file on the net shows only the act not the fact does that have to be said?

Bye the way I shot another outside night street light with the polarizer and the banding was back - I gues a lot of it is the frequency of the light wave?

Not to be a nattering nabob of negativity, but, I do not understand what anyone would bother to snap the referenced image. I understand the desire to explain through imagery the topic matter. That screen rez images are nearly useless is another matter.

Is it just that the images shown has the requisite characteristics to be an example? I still wonder at someone exerting the energy to push the shutter release.

I'll return to my rotting log.

Cheers,

Jim

Then what is the point of posting images at all?

I thought it was pretty obvious to anyone familiar with the internet that what we post is merely a reference.

Time will tell and maybe one day you will venture from under your rock and see the real thing and then all will be revealed.

Thanks for the post Dave. Of course, we can't appreciate the print quality over the web but I have similarly impressed with prints from the M8.

Cheers,

Any of you not familiar with David Adamson should check out the following links

He is one of the world's preeminent digital printmakers. He would know what he is talking about.

Question for David: Would you happen to know if the M8 files are as good as or better than the image files produced by the Leica DMR? In other words, could I get this quality you describe from the DMR?

Thank you.

I think that these are very interesting to see. Short of sending 30 x 40 inch prints to everyone who posts so they can see them for themselves, I think it's useful to hear the impressions of people who have worked with them, especially someone with experience. I'd think that we'd all want to see one for ourselves. But someone asked if anyone had printed a big print from the M8, and here's someone who did.

Thanks for posting this. (And could you send me a copy of that print? LOL)

I think Tricky Dick "victory" and Spiral Who-knew fact-evasion prizes go to the negative press on the same "screen rez images" which were completely useful in the bashing matter.

Looking good, David.

Thanks for posting -- I find it enjoyable to put an image to the words, even if it doesn't carry the effect of the real thing.

Please ignore the noise --- your credentials, and the fact that you are actually _walking the walk_ by shooting and printing --- make your contribution highly valued.

Look forward to printing a few 30x40s from the M8 myself one of these days. (btw, who the hell ever printed 30x40 off 35mm film???? isn't it amazing how the digital revolution has altered our idea of what a "big" print is? I remember when 16x20 was a HUGE print).

Had to go and make myself a scotch on the rocks!

Thanks for the support Sean - I can only imagine how you are feeling about these blogs and how quickly they can turn nasty.

I really do wish you could all see the prints personally and if you are in DC you are welcome to come by the studio.

I printed four of these out today and in between reading this column and feeling bad about the banding and IR problems I keep sidling over to the prints, admiring the quality and feeling good about the M8.

We scan and print for Annie Liebovitz, Lee Friedlander, William Christenberry, Bruce Weber,Robert Frank etc. so perhaps it is not to big of a stretch to say I know quality?

On the DMR I have never had a chance to use one perhaps someone who has both M8 and DMR can comment?

That is one gorgeous print. Thanks to this, the polarizing filter tip and the magenta-repairing algorithm in the other thread, I am now re-enthused! Overnighting M8 tomorrow.

Thanks from me, too, David:) ......ditto to the quoted message....mine is "in transit-on time.

Also thanks from me. Very nice texture subject in my opinion. And anybody willing to take an M8 image to 30 x 40 is to be listened to.

Are you in the picture of the print examiners? I'm guessing the triumphant smile is yours. :)

I'm getting used to the nastiness as being just an occupational hazard. A lot of people are having trouble believing what an excellent camera the M8 is despite its faults. Whether or not people appreciate the knowledge and skill you have, I am glad that you're taking time to post here. To be sure, at least some of us here know that you are highly qualified to be making these assessments. Please keep posting. People can learn a lot from you if they're smart enough to realize that.

BTW, how are you res'ing up the M8 files for these large prints? People should listen and learn.

Cheers,

Sean
