luigi bertolotti Posted December 23, 2007 Share #1 Posted December 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) From the times of Summarit line announcement, I decided that, if I'd ever bought one, 75 should be my choice; Christmas is here ... and tonight the 75 is at home; exterior impression good, the pouch is less luxury but fine and even more functional than the leather ones, pity for no-hood, pity also that my E46 UVIR filter is chrome-ring . My only concern was FOCUSING... would it do it right ? I hated the idea to be engaged in strange adjustments...So, even if it's late evening, arranged a quick "book test" with an angle of about 45° to the page, and lens wide open Welcome, dear visitor! luigi bertolotti Posted December 23, 2007 Author Share #2 Posted December 23, 2007 ... and also a less straight test has been satisfactory (even if, in this case, I worked freehand at 1/60 at 1 meter about... not so good) ; I focused on the toy car part "arrowed" : Welcome, dear visitor! glenerrolrd Posted December 23, 2007 Share #3 Posted December 23, 2007 The most difficult aspect of a focus test for me ...is seeing the small target clearly. I use an adjustable magnifier (megapearls 1.35X) and use a bright light right on the target. If you want to understand the characteristics of your focus calibration ..try the following. Put a figure "8" next to the line starting with "L". Focus on that ..the lines behind and in front of the target should drop of in a uniform pattern as you move outside of the depth of field. You might want to try it several times to see if you always get the same result. Another easy test is to use small bottles each about a 1/2 inch apart then focus on the middle one so you can see front or back focusing. Your test shows almost all the DOF in front of the target..but is well within normal focusing errors...so it has to be very close.

Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 23, 2007 Share #5 Posted December 23, 2007 Luigi as i tested the 75 and 90 mm Summarit I never missed focused ever. Reason I bought the 90mm and sold my 90 cron. i just don't miss at all. That is a record and I have to say i am very good at focusing but i miss with my 90 cron and the 90mm Summarit I don't that was worth the half stop loss for me on that lens. doubice Posted December 23, 2007 Share #6 Posted December 23, 2007 Luigi, It seems to me that the line in focus is 'Les anges le voient'..... Nice Cinquecento by the way. I used to drive one may years ago but, being over 195cm tall I had to drive it with the top open and my head stuck out of the sunroof! Ciao, Jan You'r right about the line in focus... but the rather rough test made it rather difficult to define exactly what I focused at... I was at about 1,2 meters from the page, hadn't a VF enlarger mounted on...and I wear spectacles too. Really You had a Cinquecento, in Canada ? For italians of my age (50) is a legend of our youth... Luigi, Shows our age, doesn't it?.........Never had one in Canada. To drive a car this small, 35 years ago in North America, would have been akin to attempting a suicide. Just a fender bender with a 2-ton Chevy Impala, Pontiac Parisienne or Chrysler New Yorker of the same vintage would have at least decapitated me. Drove one in Prague briefly, before leaving for Canada many moons ago...... Even drove a Multipla there and in Canada an X1/9 and 124! Unfortunately, in North America FIAT was interpreted as Fix It Again Toni - the poor things were constantly breaking down. All the best, Jan

sergiolov Posted December 23, 2007 Share #16 Posted December 23, 2007 Luigi, seems that your summarit focuses perfectly, both in the pleasant portrait of your doughter and in the test of the first post. The slight front focus of the first image is probably due to the common behaviour of rangefinder cameras focusing on a flat plane with 45° inclination: the sensor is slightly farther from the subject than the rangefinder mechanism. Enjoy your new lens, and post more images! Sergio

rickp13 Posted December 23, 2007 Share #18 Posted December 23, 2007 good evening all, earlier today, in another thread, i saw a focus test chart which might be useful to all those concerned about front and rear focus. you may all know about it, but it was new for me. here are the details: Focus test chart Copyright Tim Jackson 2004 tim@FocusTestChart.com Version 2.1 – (24 June 2004) The latest version is always available at Home you can also count me in as a fiat fan! my first car (1963, california) was a bright red fiat 600 with several abarth parts. later fiats included a 500 with canvas top, and a green 124 spider. great fun to drive, easy to work on. best wishes for the holidays rick

Pheraps I don't second the "fix-it-again-Tony" : We used to repair our Cinquino (Cinquecento for the International Forum) even with stocking... so no need to call "Tony":D And it's funny to know that i had to wait 3 months (with my Wrangler stopped) becuse Jeep didn't send us the right water pump for my Engine... and my mechanical's name is TONY ahahahah ROTFL:D :
ho_co Posted December 23, 2007 Share #20 Posted December 23, 2007 Rick-- Thanks for your link to the D70 Focus Chart at http://FocusTestChart.com/focus21.pdf. Long-time rangefinder users won't need the following reminder, but it may not be immediately obvious to those who have come only recently to the M camera: To use Tim Jackson's chart, set up everything as he says, but then rotate the camera 90°. That is, instead of drawing your own focus-assist line on the chart, just turn the camera to vertical and use the chart as supplied. Recognizing this is part of good rangefinder practice. In the real world, you don't usually get to modify the subject before releasing the shutter. --HC
