marknorton Posted September 26, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 26, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) So, it was this date last year, on the first day of Photokina 2006, that Leica launched the M8. A year on, it would be interesting to know how closely things have matched their expectations. They've had a bumpy ride. More sales than they were expecting, probably, more drag-along lens sales, definitely, but things like the hardware recall, IR contamination, SDS, free filter program and 30% discount lens program will have taken the shine off the success for them. In spite of that, a year of real progress to move them forwards from the dark days of summer, 2005.

But, as a way to revive their fortunes, Leica must be pleased with M8. PRobably higher sales than they expected, definitely more lens drag along sales. More sales, more lens drag-along sales More sales and more lens drag-along certainly. More of everything I expect. More problems, more sales, more lens drag-along.. I think it's probably been a much bumpier ride than they Hey Mark - its only true if you say it *THREE* times ...! :D

luigi bertolotti Posted September 26, 2007 Share #7 Posted September 26, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Some days ago I was thinking that to celebrate this 1st birthday we of the forum could do something... and I thought that in the photo section of the forum (and really in other sections, too) there are LOT of FINE pics taken with M8 (mine not included... )... would it be possible to think of a BOOK ? "M8 : his first year with amateurs" or similar. - A project manager to keep the accounting of the project - A project leader with experience in photo book publishing to define the graphics, format, style etc.. - Picture selection made by mods/admin - Divided as hereby (People, nature etc...) - Money coming from members (plus, hopefully, a discrete sponsoring from Leica Co...) on voluntary basis + a fixed amount for the published authors (...a tout honneur...) - Distribution through photo dealer channel - Who is THE PUBLISHER ? To be defined ... Is it an impossible project to achieve ? Just to cheat, I would be happy to contribute with, say, 150 or 200 Euros + buying 3 or 4 copies (... without asking for my photo on it... ... must be a serious project). I have NO IDEA about how to budget a project like this... no idea at all of the costs... but if someone of us has experience about, he can tell me if is at all absurd or not an idea. Kent10D Posted September 26, 2007 Share #8 Posted September 26, 2007 Waxing nostalgic already? I think that in spite of all the problems Leica has done very well. They may not have time to catch their breath at the moment, but as long as they don't blow it big time (excessive price increases?) the future looks good. The M8 was my introduction to Leica, and I love my M8 but have also gone out and bought a beautiful M6 and am having a whoop-up time shooting and developing my own film for the first time in about a quarter of a century. Admittedly Leica didn't make any money on the M6 (it was second hand, of course), but it's a Leica, and will need more lenses and magnifiers and all that peripheral stuff to do its thing. I'm guessing that the folks in Solms will be getting some more money out of me, and quite a few others like me. Happy birthday.
bradreiman Posted September 26, 2007 Share #9 Posted September 26, 2007 look at leica lenses on BnH. out of stock -out of stock- out of stock. leica has done really well on the heels of the m8 regardless of the problems. i have been using leica cameras and lenses for years and last november was the first time I ever bought anything new-actually from leica. yesterday i bought a second m8 and a 28/2.8-new. hats off to 'em. they have a great product and it exceeds my expectations.....b
johnbuckley Posted September 26, 2007 Share #10 Posted September 26, 2007 I appreciate Mark's celebrating the anniversary of the announcement/unveiling of the M8, but it didn't actually get into our hands until the first week of November. October is normally one of my favorite months, but last October was the longest, most tortured month of my life...going here and there to find the latest glimpse, the latest snippet, the latest rumor of when the camera would arrive. I love Luigi's idea. What if a photo forum thread for M8 users were created and each of us was allowed ONE submission -- ONE photo we could offer as an example of what this lovely camera helps us create? Whether or not it becomes a book, it would be interesting. What do you say?

andybarton Posted September 26, 2007 Share #12 Posted September 26, 2007 - Picture selection made by mods/admin. Given that, to my knowledge, only one mod has an M8, there would certainly be no bias in their selection You'd have to put all the shots you consider worthy of evaluation into a new thread though, to make it easy. No one has the time to trawl through a billion treads about IR issues, just to find M8 shots

But let's limit it to three, otherwise pandemonium will ensue. I will go to the thread and note the change. Will you submit photos so we can get it going?
