jtorrents Posted April 22, 2011 Share #1 Posted April 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) About half an hour ago, my M8 shutter decided to destruct itself...(( no Photos during this holidays... efix Posted April 22, 2011 Share #2 Posted April 22, 2011 Ouch! That looks bad ... good luck getting it repaired ... or a quick replacement solution!
epand56 Posted April 22, 2011 Share #3 Posted April 22, 2011 Do you have hints on how did it happen? It was all of a sudden or gave you some signs that something was not going on properly?
earleygallery Posted April 22, 2011 Share #4 Posted April 22, 2011 Not the 'ripped' shutter blade that we usually see, but I guess they will just fit a new unit rather than attempt repair.
Bert N Posted April 22, 2011 Share #5 Posted April 22, 2011 Do you know what the shutter actuation count was when this happened? I hope the repair will be a quick and simple process...
jtorrents Posted April 22, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted April 22, 2011 Thanks for the comments. M8 was bought brand new about 3 years ago and it performed flawlessly until today. Shutter actuations must be below 15 thousand, I have to check it. I was planning a short car trip to a lake near us. Before leave home, i mounted the wate Tri-elmar. After 30 minutes we arrived and I've just began to take a few snapshots. After three or four I've checked the LCD and found something disturbing: a pink color band in the lower part of the frame. This pink band was In all the Photos. After firing once again, I discovered a big big black and thick diagonal band. My First thought was a shutter blade. After removing the lens, I could confirm it :-(((((
LeicaMSeattle Posted April 22, 2011 Share #7 Posted April 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Look at it this way, You'll be getting an additional year of warranty after the repairs are made.
ho_co Posted April 22, 2011 Share #8 Posted April 22, 2011 It's not a stupid post, Joaquin. We feel your pain and we sympathize.
jtorrents Posted April 22, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted April 22, 2011 Thanks Ho_co! The feeling right now is that I am missing this good tool that is the M8! Tomorrow I will try to phone my dealer and ask which are my options. I don't know how much would it be, and maybe it's time to think about an M9...all it depends about the final cost of the repair (out of warranty...) For the forensic guys here is the fatal secuence... Joaquin I've just checked with M8info tool and the exact count is 14.040 shutter actuations, which I feel a very low number to produce a massive shutter failure. ¿Bad luck? By the way I've been using the discrete shutter option...but I don't feel that Leica could allow a menu option that reduced drastically shutter life... I cannot believe it, but right now, and for several days, the only camera that I could use is an Iphone ;-(((( (My M6 is some miles away, at home) Welcome, dear visitor! k-hawinkler Posted April 22, 2011 Share #10 Posted April 22, 2011 I feel your pain and hope you still enjoy the beautiful scenery. I assume the lake is near Pamplona, Spain. From the looks of it, the images could have been easily shot here in the Rocky Mountains. Best, K-H.
tobey bilek Posted April 22, 2011 Share #11 Posted April 22, 2011 I believe it is Kaput. One reason not to buy digital Leica, if it breaks out of warrantee. Let us know the repair bill.
jtorrents Posted April 22, 2011 Author Share #12 Posted April 22, 2011 Tobey: it's a pain, and it will cost a lot, I know. But I know that I will buy Leica again. Things break...bad luck for me. Now I could experiment how good is Leica customer service, a privilege that others know better than me...;-) K-H: it's not near Pamplona. It's in the Pirinees, between Spain and France, about 2.000 meters altitude. The lake is known as "Las Bullosas". Sadly, I was planning to wake up early in the morning tomorrow to be there as sun arises to capture good light. Maybe another chance in the future. Strangely, this is what upsets me more: the impossibility to photograph anything... Regards, Joaquin
ramosa Posted April 22, 2011 Share #13 Posted April 22, 2011 Sorry to hear of this. My worst camera nightmare. I would send it off for repair and quickly get some type of backup, probably something like an x1 or x100 or dp2 ...
Bert N Posted April 22, 2011 Share #14 Posted April 22, 2011 In this post, Yanidel indicated that the shutter blade can be put back in its original position by gently touching it, while it's not a permanent fix, maybe you can still get some use out of the M8... jtorrents Posted April 22, 2011 Author Share #15 Posted April 22, 2011 Bert N., thanks but it seems that It's not a thorn blade. It appears to be loose, going up and down as I move the camera... After checking my dealer's website it seems that until sunday it will not be possible to phone him due to Easter hollidays...

usm Posted April 22, 2011 Share #17 Posted April 22, 2011 Hi! Did you read my post: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/172947-m8-shutter.html I had the exact same problem. Call the CS directly and talk to them they know about problems of M8 shutters - if there was no accident. Good luck. Mario

wstotler Posted April 23, 2011 Share #19 Posted April 23, 2011 Looks familiar. Sorry to hear it put a crimp in your plans. You can click on the photo below to read more, if you like. jtorrents Posted April 23, 2011 Author Share #20 Posted April 23, 2011 Wstotler: Thanks for the link. I've read with special interest your broken shutter story. It seems that we've joined the same club :-) I really hope that being a low number of shutter actuations (14040 exactly) Leica support will take it in consideration... How long was the repair in your case? Your lens mount was really dirty! Regards, Joaquin
