Delnevo Posted December 26, 2014 Share #1 Posted December 26, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Trying to use my M (240) on Christmas day, the LED did not come on. I changed the battery and memory card even though I knew these were both good. When the main switch was turned to 'S' and the shutter depressed slightly, I obtained a 'flashing' "Sd" or "5d" (I assume it was most likely 'Sd'). I tried other good quality and fast SD cards. There is no Live View, and nothing on the Monitor. The camera is effectively dead. If I fully press the shutter it sounds as though a picture has been taken, but the SD card is empty. I also tried using the EVF but there was no LED 'on' light, view in the EVF or anything other than a black EVF view. Any thoughts, ideas, or similar experiences? Advertisement Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 Hi Delnevo, Take a look here M (240) Electronic malfunction?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted December 26, 2014 Share #2 Posted December 26, 2014 No idea sorry. Did you try to format the cards with the camera?
Delnevo Posted December 26, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted December 26, 2014 Thanks for your input. I cannot view the monitor (its blank/black) and thus cannot navigate through the menu.
pop Posted December 26, 2014 Share #4 Posted December 26, 2014 I would suspect that the contacts for the SD card don't work as they ought to. In the best case, there might be some dust or dirt in the card slot. In the worst case, the contacts are defective and need to be replaced. That's a disappointment, for sure. lct Posted December 26, 2014 Share #5 Posted December 26, 2014 So you cannot navigate when there is no card either can you?
Delnevo Posted December 26, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted December 26, 2014 Ict and Pop, thank you both. The view monitor is completely black with and without an SD card. There is no LED light. Looking through the view finder I can the (white) frame lines, and also the flashing 'Sd' and the bottom, so it's not a complete power failure. Very frustrating. Doc Henry Posted December 26, 2014 Share #7 Posted December 26, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Delnevo, I think back to the after-sales service is may be needed ? It worked before or at the reception of M240 ? bought new ? Have put a new battery charged ? Best Henry
Delnevo Posted December 26, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted December 26, 2014 Ict and Pop: Based on what you have said about possible 'contact' issues, I removed the battery and SD card and used my blower - just incase there was any dust etc. I replaced the SD card and battery, and the camera immediately came to life . So it looks as though I may have had some dust or something either within the battery or SD holding places. This is great (many thanks for the idea), but leaves me uncertain whether i should have it serviced (bought new in June 2014), or just put this down to an unfortunate experience/piece of bad luck? Delnevo Posted December 26, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted December 26, 2014 Doc Henry: Many thanks. The problem may have cleared (see above). yes the camera was bought new (June 2014), with two new batteries, both fully charged. SD cards are Sandisk extreme pro: 95mb/s, 32gb. I think I may get it serviced to be safe. Thank you all.
pop Posted December 26, 2014 Share #10 Posted December 26, 2014 This is good news. I would bring it back to the shop at the next convenient time to have a look at the card socket, but I don't think that's really necessary.
Delnevo Posted December 26, 2014 Author Share #11 Posted December 26, 2014 Phillip: Good thoughts. I will give the shop and also Leica a call after the holidays to see what they say. For the moment all seems well, but it has 'challenged' my confidence a little, and I missed wonderful photo opportunities yesterday. Thank you and others again for the very helpful feedback. It is very much appreciated. Best wishes for the new year.
algrove Posted December 27, 2014 Share #12 Posted December 27, 2014 Delnovo Let's just hope it was dirty battery or other contact area. In case it was the battery compartment which may have had some lint or something left in there from a battery change, I have a suggestion. Do not just put a bare battery in your pockets as they can pick up lint from clothing. I now use Thnk Tank battery holders for organizational needs plus a way to make sure the battery contacts not not pick up anything foreign to camera operation and stay clean. You should be fine now that it is back operating as normal.
bocaburger Posted December 27, 2014 Share #13 Posted December 27, 2014 You'd think for almost $200 they could provide the M240 battery with an end cap to cover the contacts like the M8/M9/MM/ME batteries have. I use a ziplock sandwich bag.

bocaburger Posted December 27, 2014 Share #17 Posted December 27, 2014 Wrong tree. It was the SD card slot, not the battery slot, it seems. I never said the problem was the battery slot. What I said was "You'd think for almost $200 they could provide the M240 battery with an end cap to cover the contacts like the M8/M9/MM/ME batteries have". A statement I stand by.
