Now the 2008 "One Challenge" is behind us, I would like to share some 'outtakes' from the shoot. I hope other will do the same.

Below are three of my close top contenders for submission that I decided against. All with the 24mm on the M8 @ ISO 1250 as declared to be my 'working tools'.

"Lane Drain"

"Creative Light Effect"

Other competitors please feel free to add your "outtakes" here with any comments.

Nice shots Erl!

First of all here's my build-up to the entry shot. I first saw this young monk heading towards the Basilica and took this.

As I thought he might make a good subject I followed him and took this. Then I decided to double back round the other side and saw the scene that became the entry shot.

Now for the real out-takes.

1. I'm watching you

2. Contemplation. If this one had been properly sharp I would most likely have submitted it instead, but I wasn't steady enough. An extra f stop would have clinched it.

Here is the story of my afternoon...

I had sussed out this installation in the square in the morning, and spent some time there during the two hours. However, while selecting, none of them caught my eye

Passed a cafe on the way to the castle, and I wondered whether the girl walking away had just finished the coffee

Saw this couple having their photographs taken while in the courtyard of the castle

Bumped into Erl there, and it was all a bit of a blur after that (I'd got to borrow his Nocti by this time :) )

In total agreement with recent comments re.'our' individual selection process. I am quite sure we would have had a different result if we allowed a third party to edit our choice of submission!

Andy, that is the best pic of me in years! I think I will 'stay' out of focus from now on. ;)

that was once more the big contest-question: do i choose the one i like most or the one i think the voters like best?

The more I do the the One Challenge competitions, the more I try to second guess what "everyone" will like.

Next year, I will please myself, and ignore what I think will be popular.

IMHV that is a winning attitude. Remember - You can't please all of the people all of the time .....etc

Now, time to walk the dog.

I would have handed in this image. However, being used to the M8 rather, I saw the scene and relied intuitively on time automatic. Unfortunately I had the M6 at a fast shutter setting, the image is completely underexposed and can't be saved. When I started photography, I had a manual camera and kept the camera set to environmental light for a fast shot. I should take this practice up again....

As I have been told during the dinner: "The good thing is you will never make this mistake again."

During the Challenge, I thought it might be a nice idea to take an image out of the statue. One doesn't need a lens hood inside.

However, showing the image to friends, it turned out it has no meaning to someone, who doesn't know the statue...

Well then, some more outtakes I ruled out for the one or other reason.

The globes image: since I thought I would be one of the last ones using film, I was looking for opportunities needing an exposure bandwidth too wide for a digital sensor. In the end, I can't recommend the concept to choose the motives by technical capability, the outcome seems artificial to me...
