ped Posted April 22, 2011 Share #1 Posted April 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi guys I'm considering a 21mm lens for my M4P with the accessory viewfinder. As I use a Voigtlander VCII meter at the moment, I wondered if anyone with the same body as me could try something. In the absence of a double shoe adapter, I'm going to remove the foot from the meter and stick it to the top plate, just shy of the rewind crank, using double sided velcro (don't worry, it's industrial strength stuff). I want to know if that would leave enough room for the finder in the cameras shoe. Any takers? My gut feeling is that it WILL fit. Here's the top space I'm on about. If anyone could try it (just place the parts so I can see if they fit) then I would be VERY grateful!)

Michael Geschlecht Posted April 22, 2011 Share #3 Posted April 22, 2011 Hello ped, Welcome to the Forum. The accessory shoe is attached thru the top plate to a reinforced portion of the chassis that abuts the top cover on the other side. It is attached this way so the chassis as opposed to the relatively weaker body shell can absorb some of the stresses against anything in the shoe. You might want to consider: If you use industrial strength velcro & everything fits & holds the way you want it to you might @ some point have circumstances where excessive force against the meter damages the relatively weaker top plate right where the range/viewfinder is. The range/viewfinder is the most precise/fragile/delicate part of an M. Just a thought. Best Regards, Michael
ped Posted April 22, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted April 22, 2011 Thanks for the replies. I'm not worried about the finish and the meter weighs next to nothing so if it will fit I think it will be a goer. Rewinding might be more tricky but I'm sure it will be ok and I can always remove the meter for winding.
earleygallery Posted April 22, 2011 Share #5 Posted April 22, 2011 Doesnt that meter have some way of attaching a neck cord instead?
luigi bertolotti Posted April 22, 2011 Share #6 Posted April 22, 2011 Supposed there is enough space (the Leica 21mm VF isn't little, but I havent't the CV meter and don't know), I think you end to have a "dirt" top and uneasy operation in rewind... follow James' advice: meter used by hand is also better in operation... Xmas Posted April 23, 2011 Share #7 Posted April 23, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi For those others who are not into wilful risks. a) double shoe adapters are (still) available new chrome black or 'silver' is not immune to pressure sensitive tape, the chrome on zinc is most exposed. e.g. If you cover up your red dot ot white M4-2 expect to leave permenant witness marks. Noel P.S. Most people who remove things e.g. infinity locks lose them and sell the item later, always offer a lot less, even if you are never going to use the lock, the locks can be sold on rather then put in a poly bag... Guest fsellitto Posted April 26, 2011 Share #8 Posted April 26, 2011 Hi, I have an M4-P and use a Thumbs-Up CSEP-4 which holds the VC ll meter and a 21mm voigtlander finder perfectly. I do remove the finder when I rewind the film for a bit more finger clearance. Hope this helps. Frank http://www.franksellitto.com

ped Posted April 30, 2011 Author Share #11 Posted April 30, 2011 Well, it works! I'll probably replace the velcro with some black stuff at some point, but nothing like a low cost solution! It overlaps the rewind crank slightly but as the velcro is quite think, with a space cut for the crank it fits very snugly so the meter does not actually bang against the crank or anything. Sorted. ped

lincoln_m Posted May 4, 2011 Share #13 Posted May 4, 2011 Very serious looking kit. You didn't fancy the Bessa R4M or R4A with 21mm viewfinder and meter built in then? £625 Voigtlander Bessa R4M Body - Choice of 3 viewfinder magnifications. | Robert White Photographic Ltd I have a 25mm VM lens and viewfinder but the framing is quite inaccurate especially at close range because there is no parallax built-in to the optical finder which is also off axis from the lens (up and to right). But perhaps 21mm is even wider so you get whatever you get and take the good with the bad (compositions)? The RF frame on Ms moves up to left as focus moves out to oo , I have observed. Bottom right for close, top left for distant. Regards, Lincoln
ped Posted May 5, 2011 Author Share #14 Posted May 5, 2011 Thanks for that. I'll look forward to experimenting. I much prefer an external meter as I can see all the available apertures (except f22) and available shutter speeds at a glance as the meter displays five combinations at once. I guess I'm just more used to that. On my R-D1 I have to twist the aperture ring or the shutter speed dial to see what speeds I am able to use, or do some quick mental maths (can you see why I find this harder!) Cheers ped
