Keith (M) Posted January 30, 2011 Share #1 Posted January 30, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) After eight years of exclusive digital use, the lure of b&w film tempts me to buy a film-body for use with my M-series lenses. M4 preferably but might stretch to an M6. Where/who to buy from? Ffordes seem to have a good selection but look a little pricey (?). Not keen on buying from EBay after a bad experience with a Canon 5D. So, if anyone has any recommendations, I would appreciate them. Even better, if anyone has an M4 or M6 gathering dust... Advertisement Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Hi Keith (M), Take a look here Recommended UK source(s) for M4 or M6?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Stealth3kpl Posted January 30, 2011 Share #2 Posted January 30, 2011 Red Dot Cameras seem to be getting a good reputation. I bought all three of my film Ms and an M8.2 off Ebay. 3 of them needed CLA so expect that. I'm very very pleased with the film Ms. The M8.2 was sold on. plasticman Posted January 30, 2011 Share #4 Posted January 30, 2011 I've bought from Aperture, Robert White (fewer used items these days, but always excellent) and Ffordes in the UK. I can warmly recommend all of them.

Xmas Posted January 31, 2011 Share #8 Posted January 31, 2011 You should also try the UK dealers who sponsor the forum. If you can make London I'd visit Red Dot and Aperture. Aperture do the best carrot juice in London. Ivor will sell you a camera e.g. missing a bit of vulcanite cheaper... Suggest a M2 or M4-2 cheaper than M4. alun Posted January 31, 2011 Share #9 Posted January 31, 2011 All those mentioned (Peter Loy is a new name to me -- thanks) plus Richard Caplan: smaller selection perhaps but my general impression is of slightly lower prices than elsewhere. (I have no connection etc etc....)
Twotone Posted January 31, 2011 Share #10 Posted January 31, 2011 I bought an M3 from Ffordes last month and can't recommend them enough. Sure you'll pay a bit more but they have a seven day return policy and the camera I bought was exactly as described. I ordered the camera at 2pm one day and it was delivered at 7am the next morning. If your looking an for absolutely mint camera then try collectcamera in Holland, the owner's name is Theo and he is very very approachable, his prices are high but his stuff is excellent. I bought a 1966 50mm F2 Summicron from him and I swear it has never been on a camera. Products Tony
fotolebrocq Posted February 1, 2011 Share #11 Posted February 1, 2011 It's worth checking out Harrisons cameras from time to time. I bought an immaculate Chrome M6 TTL for a very good price with a 1 year guarantee. A similar one went on Ebay the day mine arrived for £200 more! jpattison Posted February 1, 2011 Share #12 Posted February 1, 2011 and, of course, David Stephens in Manchester. Always has a good selection in, and very reasonably priced. Pre-Owned John
nickdando Posted February 1, 2011 Share #13 Posted February 1, 2011 Malcolm Taylor may have something suitable, and you'll know that it's just been serviced, too. Try him on 01568 770542. And there's also Paul at Commercial Cameras in Church Stretton in Shropshire. He has an M4 at the moment. Keith (M) Posted February 1, 2011 Author Share #14 Posted February 1, 2011 Thank you all for all the suggestions/recommendations. I have spent a large part of today trawling through websites, speaking with potential suppliers and have made a decision In the end I decided that an M2 fitted the bill very nicely and was more easily justified to SWMBO. Therefore one chrome M2 should be arriving by the end of the week, accompanied by a Weston Master V and I may well report back on how things turn out. Now, must pop into town for some b&w film plus dev. Oh, and better clamber up into the loft and dig-out my Patterson tank and other paraphernalia! Thanks again. Keith (M) Posted February 3, 2011 Author Share #15 Posted February 3, 2011 Well, it arrived just before lunch, visually it is everything as described/expected and I am now half way through the my first roll of HP5. The M2 is a joy to behold! I had also ordered a Weston Master V, complete with Invercone and leather cases but unfortunately the plastic surround of the activating button is broken and therefore the push-button is not properly supported, making operation is intermittent. I will have to return it which is a real shame.

Sixstring Posted February 3, 2011 Share #18 Posted February 3, 2011 Ffordes without hesitation. I bought an M3 last year from them and the camera was above expectations. Very solid return policy as well. Otherwise in Germany: meister camera. Cheers
