darvin2138 Posted August 13, 2008 Share #1 Posted August 13, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I think I got a lemon 28mm Cron ASPH.... . I got the unit from Hong Kong last July of this year, now it is only August and it has a problem already. I barely use this lens until today I noticed that the front glass together with the metal portion with white dot marker for the aperture label, where you attached the filter and hood rotates. Is there anyway I can repair it myself or I need to bring it to Leica authorized dealer? TIA

jaapv Posted August 13, 2008 Share #3 Posted August 13, 2008 I do not know about this lens specifically, but often it is just a matter of tightening the slotted ring at the back of the lens.

Where is that specific slot to tighten do you mind showing it to me. thanks..
jaapv Posted August 13, 2008 Share #6 Posted August 13, 2008 I really cannot visualize the construction,an owner should step in, but often there is a ring at the back of the lens that secures the optical cell to the mount. A simple tighten will solve the problem in that case.
Guest jimmy pro Posted August 13, 2008 Share #7 Posted August 13, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) That lens is made like the 35 Cron IV and 35 Cron ASPH meaning the front part is screwed on with glue to hold it from unscrewing. Sherry told me so. She said she's reglued a ton of them (the 35's) and expects the 28's to be big busniess for her someday to.
jaapv Posted August 13, 2008 Share #8 Posted August 13, 2008 Thanks Jimmy. So it is more of a matter for Sherry or Don than Leica service, I suppose.
andybarton Posted August 13, 2008 Share #9 Posted August 13, 2008 Take it back to the shop where you bought it or an authorised dealer with proof of purchase, and ask for a new one. Why bother with trying to fix it yourself when clearly it is faulty? Why do you need to get a third party involved?
jaapv Posted August 13, 2008 Share #10 Posted August 13, 2008 Well, Andy, from the Phillipines to Hong Kong is a bit of a distance....
lct Posted August 13, 2008 Share #11 Posted August 13, 2008 Can't speak for the 28/2, mine is OK, but i've been screwing and unscrewing my 35/2 IV 'head' for about 30 years, never felt the need to have it fixed and it still makes great images. FWIW.
darvin2138 Posted August 13, 2008 Author Share #12 Posted August 13, 2008 Thanks for the reply guys. True, why involve third party since this is new. I think have no choice but to send it again to Hong Kong. It will just cost me time, S&H....Ohh dear....is this what you get for a high end camera or I'm just unlucky? andybarton Posted August 14, 2008 Share #13 Posted August 14, 2008 Well, Andy, from the Phillipines to Hong Kong is a bit of a distance.... Fair enough, but it's still an out-and-out warranty issue, not one that needs the intervention of a third party. BTW, the link to the variance thread isn't relevant in this case. jaapv Posted August 14, 2008 Share #14 Posted August 14, 2008 True, Andy.I was thinking of convenience. It is probably a 20$ repair.
darvin2138 Posted August 14, 2008 Author Share #15 Posted August 14, 2008 Yes, Jaapv that is the term, convenience. If only I can repair this why not. It's a hazzle sending it back and forth, not to mention the taxation law here... I dont know why we dont have an authorized dealer here. Maybe the market is not enough for them. Guest leica_mage Posted August 14, 2008 Share #16 Posted August 14, 2008 BTW, the link to the variance thread isn't relevant in this case. It is obliquely relevant, because there we touch on the issue of quality control as well. To this poster, quality control and customer service are the first things that Solms needs to look to before any true resurrection. Not what happens to the R line, whether there will be an M9 or an M8.2, or bringing out Summarits. Quality control and customer service.
masjah Posted August 14, 2008 Share #17 Posted August 14, 2008 Isn't the "baseline" Leica warranty an international one? (I'm not talking about extras such as Passports which are related to a particular national distributor, and would exclude, for example, grey imports.) So, provided that the purchase has been properly registered, surely it should be possible to have it repaired (within the "baseline" guarantee period of course) at the local Leica service agency, without having to send it back to Hong Kong? OK my fault - should have read the details of all the posts more carefully! Looks like it will have to go back via Hong Kong then - my sincere commiserations for the hassle.
