doubice Posted February 27, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 27, 2010 I don't believe this is the case in the US and Canada. Warranty is only extended to the original buyer of the camera - at least that is how it was / is with the M8 and M8.2. I don't think the policy has changed for the M9. If the subsequent owner ships the camera to New Jersey under the name of the original owner, the warranty will be covered however.... Go figure..... jaapv Posted February 27, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted February 27, 2010 Well, considering Leica factory guarantee is worldwide you can always claim it by sending to Solms instead of NJ. Somebody from the USA should get Leica USA to make a clear statement on this discrepancy.

Go figure..... I don't think it's a "go figure" Jan. It's a case of the subsequent owner lying about who he is. Later, Johnny
AlbertoDeRoma Posted February 27, 2010 Share #9 Posted February 27, 2010 Prompted by questions raised in this forum, I asked Leica about their policy. Official answer: Yes- Leica guaranty transfers to the next owner. I live in the US and, for what it's worth, I purchased a new 28mm 'cron, registered it and the "passport" that came back with it says that the passport/warranty is non-transferable. Johnny_Johnson Posted March 1, 2010 Share #10 Posted March 1, 2010 Friday I sent NJ an Email asking if the USA warranty on the M8/M9 bodies was transferable from the original owner to a new owner. I received the answer today. "Warranties are not transferable." I would include a copy of the Email but it included the following footnote: "Unauthorized dissemination, forwarding orcopying of this e-mail is strictly prohibited." I guess the next question is: Are M8/M9 bodies sold in the USA also covered by an international warranty in addition to the USA warranty and will Solms honor that warranty in case of ownership transfer? I'll leave it up to others to pursue that issue. Later, Johnny
jaapv Posted March 1, 2010 Author Share #11 Posted March 1, 2010 Well, that is specific for the USA. For instance the UK Passport comes with a special field to insert the next owner. I think the next step is for one of the USA Ambassadors to ask Solms for a clarification. I am 99.5% sure that Leica Solms will honor the guaranty for gear puchased worldwide. Welcome, dear visitor! Johnny_Johnson Posted March 1, 2010 Share #12 Posted March 1, 2010 Well, that is specific for the USA. For instance the UK Passport comes with a special field to insert the next owner.. For what it's worth M8/M9 bodies sold in the USA aren't covered by a Passport warranty either. I'm not an ambassador (whatever that might be) but as long as I'm this far into it I'll send Solms an Email and ask about international warranties. Jeff S Posted March 1, 2010 Share #13 Posted March 1, 2010 Here's a post from David Farkas from December, 2007 regarding discontinuation of the Passport... Yes. It is true. Currently purchased product will still have the Passport Warranty honored. The memo reads as follows: With effect from January 1, 2008, all Leica M and R cameras and lenses will no longer have a passport warranty. Leica Camera Inc. will implement a new warranty which will be consistent worldwide. Warranty coverage for the M & R cameras and lenses will be stated as a Limited 2 Year Warranty covering defects in workmanship or materials. The reasons for this change are many. As previously stated, the warranty coverage will now be consistent worldwide. European Union and German law and regulation have impact upon both the form and length of warranties that can be offered. As a German company, that has direct implications for us. The change in our warranty coverage does not reflect any change in the quality of our products. It is more of a necessity to be in step with the worldwide warranty coverage of Leica products. Here is the breakdown of all Leica poduct warranties: M8 - 2 yrs limited M7+MP - 5 yrs limited R9 - 5 yrs limited M lenses - 2 yrs limited R lenses - 2 yrs limited Digilux 3 - 6 month passport + 2.5 yrs limited = 3 yrs V-Lux 1 - 2 yrs limited D-Lux 3 - 2 yrs limited C-Lux 2 - 2 yrs limited Flash - 2 yrs limited Accessories - 2 yrs limited Ultravid BR - Lifetime passport Ultravid HD - 5+5 yrs limited = 10 yrs Compact binoculars - 5+5 yrs limited = 10 yrs Spotting scopes - 5+5 yrs limited = 10 yrs Oculars - 5+5 yrs limited = 10 yrs Geovid BRF - 5 yrs limited LRF/CRF - 2 yrs limited (Quote from David Farkas post) Jeff
Johnny_Johnson Posted March 5, 2010 Share #14 Posted March 5, 2010 I asked Solms (m8.support@leica-camera.com) about international warranties on M8/M9 bodies sold in the USA. Here is what I asked: "Are the M8/M9 cameras sold in the USA also covered by an international warranty that is transferable between parties and which would be honored if a body was sent to Solms by a second owner within the warranty period?" Here is the answer that I received: "Leica warranty is two years worldwide and will be transferred to all following owners. It belongs to the camera and not to the owner." I have since asked this person to describe the procedure that should be used to transfer the remaining warranty to the new owner. rob_x2004 Posted March 5, 2010 Share #15 Posted March 5, 2010 Warranty coverage for the M & R cameras and lenses will be stated as a Limited 2 Year Warranty covering defects in workmanship or materials. Is this bit right and is it worth the paper its printed on? My experience with solms was that they made a total hash, had a second go made a total hash, Im down about two grand on repairs and courers, insurance, customs ufck ups courtesy solms again, and Ive given up. Its rotting in the ceiling these days.
jaapv Posted March 5, 2010 Author Share #16 Posted March 5, 2010 I asked Solms (m8.support@leica-camera.com) about international warranties on M8/M9 bodies sold in the USA. The registering procedure is completely straightforward and can be done on the owners section of the Leica website: https://owners.leica-camera.com/en/login If the previous owner has registered here, he should first deregister the article, or you must send a mail to Leica. Johnny_Johnson Posted March 5, 2010 Share #19 Posted March 5, 2010 The registering procedure is completely straightforward and can be done on the owners section of the Leica website: https://owners.leica-camera.com/en/login If the previous owner has registered here, he should first deregister the article, or you must send a mail to Leica. Well, according to my contact in Solms it's much simpler than that. "Warranty transfers automatically to the new owner. But he/she needs to have the the first owners original sales slip and warranty card." But, my warranty card was mailed to NJ per instructions on the card and later Emails with them. If I decide to sell before the warranty is up I'll pursue the matter further with NJ/Solms. Later, Johnny
