Michael Geschlecht Posted November 25, 2010 Share #62 Posted November 25, 2010 Hello David, Two things: First, it would appear I am late again. I just noticed: Welcome to the Forum David. Secondly, I would also prefer a leg of lamb for Thanksgiving. I like to cook mine as rare as a really rare roast beef. How do you make yours? Happy Thanksgiving everybody. That's another advantage of this Forum. We not only get the best information from people all over the World we also get to have everybody's holidays. luigi bertolotti Posted November 29, 2010 Share #63 Posted November 29, 2010 (edited) ...and here is IT.. ... from the last batch of 200 items made in 1980 (3.059.688), lenshead 11904 with Televit adapter 14138 (this adapter has been the main factor to decide me to have it... ). First verification, given how this thread started : the lens' head FITS perfectly the bellows 2, the screw-in is not so soft... an action to be made carefully... but the threads are undoubtly the same ones : Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! (hommage to JC... M3+VisoIII.. ) Mounted onto the Televit, is a real pleasure to handle: compact, well balanced... I'm curios to verify which exposure time one can afford when free-handed... I'd bet for 1/500 even at distances of 10 meters about... And here's the "Telyt 2,5 version"... not surprisingly the lenshead fits the V2 focus unit (usual "16598" thread)... not a nice look... The V2 and V3 heads, side by side, look significantly different (the V3 is lighter, too)... ...but, measuring with a caliper, the distance from the front lens to the flange of the small thread is the same... I didn't make test to verify if the "V2,5" focus correctly with Viso3+OUBIO... too dark out of home... but suspect it could work. (btw, invisible in the pic, but the collar above the "16598" thread has the small retaining screw quoted by JC) Edited November 30, 2010 by luigi bertolotti
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! david werbeloff Posted November 30, 2010 Author Share #64 Posted November 30, 2010 Hello, Luigi, You must be very excited! Congratulations! It looks like you found Treasure; a minty 280 and a Televit. I suspect that since both JC's and your 280 V3 are later production than mine, that the large diameter thread was changed so 16598 was no longer necessary. Interesting too that your 7.5mm ring on the 16598 thread has the set screw = not intended to come off easily. I plan to post some photos taken with the lens on the Bellows II in the next weeks. When my V3 was bought new in 1982, it was the "cheapest" of the Telyt family (and I use the term loosely), and IMHO one of the under-rated members of the Leitz lens family. Non si poteva resistere... David : the Televit of my picture is indeed an item I have had for more than 15 years... it arrived as part of a fine Telyt 400+560 f 5,6 set. Just a quick test with this new toy to verify sharpness at low distances... looks to stand up rather well compared to one of my favorite macro lenses (the Elmar 90 f4 - 3 elements version). luigi bertolotti Posted December 1, 2010 Share #70 Posted December 1, 2010 About contrast... I see now how my various pics of the 280 are all with an unpleasantly low contrast... sorry, but was a quick "pose session" in my room with diffuse light... and it was late evening so that, to make it even quickier, shot with my M8 (Summicron 50) directly in jpg with no PP... luigi bertolotti Posted December 3, 2010 Share #72 Posted December 3, 2010 David, have you further "scratched your head" ? I mean... your V3 lens' head... I checked my new one... fits the bellows, 63,9 mm diameter, pitch 0,75... same as std. 16558 ring for various lensheads... I'm a lot curios to understand if your issue is just a matter of threads' wear or similar, or if there is indeed a real original strange difference... luigi bertolotti Posted December 4, 2010 Share #76 Posted December 4, 2010 (edited) A small detail I discovered on my new 280V3 head... there is a "59" engraved at hand on the back face of the collar with the (STANDARD... ) thread; it remembers similar engravings that were common on lenses with removable heads like the Summicrons 50 (they reported the real focal length) and others. I wonder if it is a factory reference for some fine tuning of the assembly (for instance, regarding the exact positioning of the 6mm collar next to the smaller thread, which is secured by the tiny scrw above quoted) or a sort of "memo" in case a buyer of the 11904 lenshead only (my item was clearly sold like this, for Televit usage) would like to add the standard focusing unit afterwards... there was such a possibilty, years before, for the 90s and 135s sold as "lenshead only"... but their focusing units were availble as normal commercial codes, while I seem that the 280V3 focusing unit had not such a code... but maybe could be special-ordered as a lab work, or available as spare. k-hawinkler Posted January 25, 2011 Share #79 Posted January 25, 2011 (edited) the three models illustrated here : Gentlemen, Thanks for this terrific thread - quite a detective story. Looking at the above images I recognize the middle one as version 2 - as I have that one. Am I assuming correctly that the first shown lens is version 1 and the last shown is version 3? Please, confirm or correct me. Thanks. I also came across this tiny image on the web that I enlarged somewhat. It purportedly shows a Telyt 280/4.8 from 1975 with S# 2757xxx, Leica part # 11914. To me it looks somewhat different from the 3 lenses above. What do you think? May I also solicit your assessment of the optical qualities of the version 3 lens? How does it compare to more recent, say R-lenses of similar focal length? Thanks. Best, K-H. Welcome, dear visitor! jc_braconi Posted January 25, 2011 Share #80 Posted January 25, 2011 Hello, the pict you got on the web is showing a version 3 it differs only with mine by the shape of the prehensive grooves on focal and dia. rings the "scalloped" one is the from the early issue you will find this difference on Tele Elmar 135 also to refer a few. I will not compare R lens with V lenses if they are not from the same era. Usualy contemporary lens with the sale focal lenght, with the same range of aperture and with the same composite elements are equals.
