Lei-ko R lens to S adapter

Just to say that I received my adapter from Michael Leibfritz today, after my short holiday in Oslo with the family. I have only managed a very short 5 minute play with it, using my 280/4 APO and 180/2 lenses.

Firstly it looks beautifully machined. Easy to fit (R lens to adapter and then adapter to S body). Although you have to use MF and stop down metering, I don't find that a real issue. Michael's estimates of the max focussing distance seem about spot on - 12m for the 180 and 20m for the 280. I am planning to send my lenses to Wetzlar to get the max focus distance adjusted to allow infinity focus on the S.

When I get time to go outside, I will take a few test shots and post them.

Hi Arif,

You can buy this from Michael Leibfritz at Lei-ko. His email is info@lei-ko.de

Leibfritz Konstruktion

The price to me was 500 euros inc european shipping. Delivery was very quick by overnight tracked courier.

I have just been out to do some test shots with my 280/4 APO and 180/2 APO

Here are the 280/4 APO test shots. Sorry of these are just small jpegs. Please email me off list if you want the full size files - topoxforddoc@btinternet.com

My copy of the 280/4 APO focusses past the infinity point already (up to the "m" mark on the barrel). This is 40m + (see car shot). All the images were shot at ISO400 (dull overcast day) with the 280/4 wide open at F4.

Cars shot - approx 40m+ at max focus distance

Wall shot - about 10m

Flower shot - about 5m

Good news. I have just tried the 1.4x APO converter with my 3 cam 280/4 APO. I can now get to infinity focus on the S (006). Hooray!

Sorry, but the pics will have to wait. I went out into the street at home tonight to check. Too dark for pics. Drizzling and cloudy, so I couldn't even photograph the moon.

Thanks for posting the information and pictures. A few questions: Does the lens cover the full sensor of the Leica S? Will Leica be able to adjust the infinity focus, I would think that would require major customization, removing portions of the lens and reconfiguring communication with the bayonet?

Hi Daryl,

With lenses of focal length longer than 180, the image circle covers the sensor on the S entirely. I have corresponded with Andrea Frankl at Wetzlar, who told me that they can modify the infinity focus for the 180/2 and 280/4 (as I have these and asked specifically). I don't know about other lenses, but you can always email her.

Here is my email correspondence with her. I believe they can adjust the infinity focus, so that one can use the R lens on both my existing DMR and the S (006).

Best wishes,

Charlie

Dear Mr. Chan,

Thank you for your inquiry.

I have talked to our technician and was told that we do such changes as requested but can´t say what kind of costs to expect. So please send us the lenses and our technician will make out an estimate.

Looking forward to receiving the lenses.

Betreff: Adjustment of infinity focus on 280/4 Apo Telyt-R & 180/2 Summicron-R

Good morning,

I am just writing to ask if the 280/4 and 180/2 R lenses can have the infinity focus extended at Wetzlar. Although I use these lenses extensively on my R9/DMR, I have also recently acquired a S(006). Unfortunately the longer focal length options are very limited on the S at the moment.

Although Leica do not make an R lens-S adapter, Michael Leibfritz at Lei-ko has engineered one. He has tested these 2 lenses on a S body with the adapter. The image circles are large enough for the S sensor, but the max focus distance is limited (12m on the 180/2 & 20m on the 280/4). I understand that Leica have been able to adjust the max focus distance on some of the longer R lenses.

Could you let me know if this might be possible, and if so, how much this might cost?

The 180/2 lens is a ROM version - S/N 3689790

The 280/4 APO Telyt is a 3 cam version - S/N 3658976

Thank you for your help.

Best wishes,

Charlie

Sun is out briefly. Some pics with the 280/4 APO and 1.4 x APO converter. Taken at ISO400 handheld with the lens wide open. I can focus past infinity with an unmodified 3 cam 280/4 APO and 1.4x APO converter.

Houses about 1/3 mile away, with crop

Flying birds, with crop

There is a modest amount of vignetting in the corners. Otherwise, not bad at all. Sorry about the artistic quality, or rather lack of!

I've had a little more time today and the sun has been out. This time 280/4 plus 1.4x APO converter at F5.6 ISO 400 on a Manfrotto 190 MG tripod and 460 MG head (too light really for this lens, but it's the only head I have)

Charlie,

It seems a lot of effort trying to get a lens to do something it was not designed for. If you wanted longer lenses for the S, which I totally understand, would not one of the Hasselblad V Zeiss lenses be a better, if rather heavier starting point. First as the flange focal distance at 74.9mm is longer than the S (I am not sure what this is as it is not listed on any of my books but I am guessing around 62mm), you would easily get infinity focus. Secondly you could be totally sure the image circle was large enough.

If you wanted, I understand you can now also get an autofocus adapter for the Hasselblad H lenses but they are REALLY heavy. A few years ago I hired an H2 with the 55 to 110 lens and digital back for a day. I handed it back at lunchtime, as my back was absolutely killing me lugging that monster around and trying to use it on a monopod.

Hi Wilson,

My problem is that I already have the 280/4 and want to use my R9/DMR as well. The image circle on the 180 and 280 Leica lenses i large enough. I use the 180 for gigs, so the max focus distance is fine. Of course I can take both the S and DMR along and use the same 180 lens. The 280/4 looks to be fine too, esp with the 1.4x APO. I'll be taking it to the Revival next week, so I can see how it performs.

The main issue is movement blur on the S, due to the bigger mirror and larger sensor. But I'm sure that's surmountable. If I can hand hold the DMR & 180/2 at 1/30th, then I'm sure I can do something sensible with the S.

Charlie,

I wholly sympathise with trying to get one lens to do more than one job.

For the first time for many years, neither I nor my brother will be competing at the Revival, as we have both had to give racing permanently for medical reasons and nearly all the racing cars have gone. However we will still be playing with cars, as we are doing the Colorado Grand Rally. Hope you enjoy yourself at Goodwood.
