Sorry. Why don't you post the serial number so if it shows up on ebay or the like, people will know. And report it to Leica so that if it is ever sent in for service, questions can be asked.
zlatkob Posted January 10, 2011 Share #3 Posted January 10, 2011 (edited) Sometimes people get lucky and their stolen camera turns up. Definitely post the body & lens serial numbers here. Also post any other identifying details, such as body & lens colors, and especially if you customized anything. Keep on eye on eBay sales. Alert the local police. Let us know how it was stolen; maybe someone will have some other ideas for you. Also, calm down, take a deep breath, and remember that, as nice as it is, it is only a camera! dorukt Posted January 10, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted January 10, 2011 (edited) Unfortunately, I haven't recorded the serial number, I got some papers at my home which is far away from me for ~1000kms. These papers might contain the serial number. Currently I am tracking all turkish forums and all local stores/internet stores. I'll track turkish sellers on ebay too. Already reported to police and yeah it's a camera, the camera bought with my hardly earned money as a student. wish me luck. ps.: I've never been lucky in things like this one. samuelphoto Posted January 10, 2011 Share #6 Posted January 10, 2011 Oh my, that is terrible. So sorry to hear the bad news. Good idea to post the equipment info here and on rangefinderforum. Of course I would keep an eye on eBay too and any local classifieds (Craigslist in the US is popular, especially with thieves). Did you have insurance? cam2000 Posted January 10, 2011 Share #7 Posted January 10, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am very sorry to hear about your lost and hope there may be a positive outcome. I would recommend that you use the Leica owner area to register your equipment, this way if your away from home and some mishap arrives you can always access your serial numbers....https://owners.leica-camera.com/index.php/en/login

Look at your images the serial number of the camera is recorded with every image. That doesn't help you with the lens so maybe, like others on this forum, at one time you taak a shot of the camera with the lens on it and if so you might be able to see the serial for the lens in that shot. Like a shot in a mirror.
zlatkob Posted January 10, 2011 Share #9 Posted January 10, 2011 Let people know, on this forum and others, exactly where and when the camera was stolen. This way, if they happen to be in that general area, they can be extra alert to anyone trying to sell this camera, especially someone trying to sell it without the charger and manual (assuming those were not also stolen). This way you may have some other people looking out for it on your behalf. Good luck!!
Steve Fines Posted January 10, 2011 Share #10 Posted January 10, 2011 (edited) You can look up the serial # in the exif of a file taken with the camera. If you don't have PS or another program handy I'm sure if you provided a link to a file you took someone here could look up the serial # for you. Also, why don't you give the place that sold the camera / lens initially a call - I'm sure they have the serial numbers as well. jaapv Posted January 10, 2011 Share #11 Posted January 10, 2011 It is not THAT easy to sell a stolen M9 - it is a bit of a specialist camera, and as soon as the serial number is known it is virtually impossible to get it serviced or repaired without getting into trouble, nor will people buy it without knowledge of details. That probably means the thief did not know what he was stealing and you have the best chance of finding the camera again by contacting your local police - and watching e-bay. andybarton Posted January 10, 2011 Share #12 Posted January 10, 2011 Does EVERYONE know that the serial number is in the EXIF? I didn't.
earleygallery Posted January 10, 2011 Share #13 Posted January 10, 2011 As already said your serial number will be in the file info of each photo. If you bought new and presumably registered the camera and lens for warranty, Leica should also have a record of the lens serial number for you. I assume you didn't have insurance? If it were me, as well as notifying the police and posting the info here, I would also send full details of the items to Leica and all of their official dealers (listed on their website) as well as keeping a close eye on ebay. 3rdtrick Posted January 10, 2011 Share #14 Posted January 10, 2011 Does EVERYONE know that the serial number is in the EXIF? I didn't. We fussed about it when we first heard but maybe it is a good thing after all. Sure hope you can locate your camera Dorukt. Pete

RoySmith Posted January 10, 2011 Share #16 Posted January 10, 2011 I'm sorry to read about your loss. As the others have said it isn't easy to sell a used M9 so there is hope. Your photos have the cameras serial no and I'm sure your dealer has the serial number for the lens. This would help the police and would help when you are searching eBay and pawn shops. What were the circumstances of the theft ? Roy

dorukt Posted January 11, 2011 Author Share #18 Posted January 11, 2011 My backpack containing Leica M9 was taken from my friends car parked in the lot of a shopping center in the Istanbul/Kadikoy at around 7:00 pm. I tought I locked the doors by using remote control device. But actually it didn't. Police said thieves started using gsm jammers to block remote control device signals.... you thought you locked the doors......you see the lights flashes....but doors are not locked due to these jammers blocking signals. guys always check your doors manually and make sure its locked properly... btw i found an exif viewer and it shows everything but serial number of leica? there is nothing called "serial number"
doronski Posted January 11, 2011 Share #19 Posted January 11, 2011 Hi, I sympathize with your loss and can understand your frustration. One thing I would add though, it is a beautiful inanimate object, but an object never the less. So its important to keep perspective as there are many things far more important than a chunk of metal. Suicide is not a proportionate response. Best wishes and good luck for recovery.
erl Posted January 11, 2011 Share #20 Posted January 11, 2011 A most upsetting experience. You have my sympathies. You follow the recommendations given by earlier posters. It is surprising how well this sort of exposure can turn up results, given a bit of time. On the note regarding the serial numbers of M9's and other cameras, I notice that the number is buried very deeply within PS. It took me awhile to find it. Not very user friendly. Phase One's C1 does not record it at all which I find a bit annoying. I don't know if that is their fault or Leica's fault. In some situations I would like to easily determine which of my bodies made a particular image. I don't know how LR handles this issue.
