The M2, code word KOOHE, catalog number 10835M commenced production in 1957, at serial number 926001. Originally envisaged as a less costly alternative

to the popular but expensive M3.

Production ended in 1967 at serial number 1165000 after 85200 units build (all versions included).

The main difference between the M2 and the M3 are that the former has an external manual reset film counter and the viewfinder which incorporates finders

for 35, 50 and 90 focal lengths.

The M2 accepts the rapid wind Leicavit without modification.

 

Early models no self timer and button rewind, second models, no self timer, lever rewind and third model self timer and lever rewind.

 

First illustrated the button rewind model with respective :

Summicron rigid 2/50 1st model SOSIC / 11618 ( narrow knurled ) and 12585 sunshade,

Summicron 2/35 1st model 8 elements SAWOM /11308 and 12571 J sunshade,

Tele Elmarit 2.8/90 chrome version 11800 and 12575 sunshade,

And topped by a Leicameter MC like illustrated on the background catalog.

Second illustrated is the lever rewind model equipped with a Leicavit MP chrome SYOOM-M with original box and a Summicron 2/35 1st model 8 elements

SAWOM /11308 with respective 12571 J sunshade.

3 booklets of full instructions for the M2 in German, English and French and a catalog English printed in the foreground.

Third illustrated the self timer and lever rewind equipped model with respective :

Summicron rigid 2/50 2nd model SOSIC / 11618 ( large knurled ),

Summicron 2/35 1st model 8 elements SAWOM /11308,

Elmarit 2.8/90 chrome version, ELRIM/11129,

a Leicameter MR as we can see illustrated on the background catalogs.

and a M2 “Kurzanleitung”.

Yes! The M2 is the sexiest of all M cameras. It's like an early MG car -- you do practically sit on the tarmac and hope it won't begin to rain. But seriously, I regard it as the first practical Leica camera ever.

This "A little...." is a wonderful series. You have a fantastic collection. It's great that you have all the lens hoods, meters, instruction manuals, brochures, et, etc, as well as the cameras and lenses.
