proenca Posted January 11, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 11, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there, I stumbled across this : Its a Leica 0 Limited Edition set, comes with box, papers, one print and well, the camera. Its at a decent price 600€, is it worth it ? I tend it buy it and use it in a blue moon, not to use as daily or even weekend shooter... But more as an investment.. what you guys think ? Why it has so low collecters value ? Seems a nice piece of kit ( camera + box ) , good investment ?
Advertisement Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 Hi proenca, Take a look here Leica 0 Limited Edition : worth it ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted January 11, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 11, 2010 It's very good value at €600 - especially as it includes the print. I doubt it will have any great collector value as it is a modern copy (albeit exquisitely done) and it is not rare. I have the previous 0 replica - the one with the 'gunsight' and without the print (and also without the horrible metal plaque of Barnack stuck on the back) - and it's a nice enough piece of kit to have a play around with. The lens - in spite of the modern coating - does have an interesting look about it.
luigi bertolotti Posted January 11, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 11, 2010 Considering the price, is an attractive buy for a Leica lover : I wouldn't think of it as an investiment (it's anyway a copy) but as a nice kit to have.
azzo Posted January 11, 2010 Share #4 Posted January 11, 2010 Attractive price.
earleygallery Posted January 11, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 11, 2010 Price seems good but its a bit of a novelty item really. You could buy a nice LTM Leica and 5cm Elmar instead.
dkCambridgeshire Posted January 12, 2010 Share #6 Posted January 12, 2010 It is a bargain price compared to when new. As an investment, that is a matter of opinion - at that price you could get your money back but would not be easy to sell. The print is worthy of being framed. I also have the earlier version but very seldom use it. It has a low collectors' value because it is a replica and not sought after - thus there is no real 'scarcity' factor. Not all special edition Leicas are sought after collectables even though they were marketed as such - look at all the M6 Special Editions ie over 20 different models - they stick on dealers' shelves for months because few people want them especially at their inflated prices. If you want an 'investment' or more correctly a possible investment stick with the original article eg a genuine Anastigmat or Elmax. Cheers dunk

hector_jorge Posted January 19, 2010 Share #9 Posted January 19, 2010 I have the previous 0 model too. A nice camera, and the only way to have it. A mint condition replica translate me to the past and allows me to feel as a Leica fan of many, many years ago buying his first Leica camera. That feeling worth the price by itself. volker_hack Posted February 9, 2010 Share #10 Posted February 9, 2010 The use of this camera is a little bit tricky; the feeling is great, and the lens is one of the best ever produced. Try it, especially with a super fine grain black&white film like adox 25, it would be a special experience!
George Furst Posted April 26, 2010 Share #11 Posted April 26, 2010 best advice in my view: always go for the genuine model, not the copy This would be true if the original camera were selling for a reasonable price. I personally think that 50,000 Euro is beyond the reach of most on this list. Also even if I could afford an original I would be scared to take it out for a run at that price. It would be in the bank vault. The copy is as close to the original as possible. The coated lens is excellent and this is my favorate B&W film camera. Yes it takes getting used to but what pictures it is capable of! The original evidently was not sold but given to Leitz distributers world wide as a sample to "feel the waters". I am sure that most were shocked that Leitz was going into the camera buisness as microscopes were considered a much higher standard of instrument with a higher clientele than that of a simple camera. And using the small format of movie film too, what a joke!! I really appreciate that little repro gem. It is so beautifully built and I have no idea why Leitz did issue the repro as I am sure that it was not a big money maker. As you know each was hand made in the same manner as the original was constructed. To me it was a labor of love and I really admire Leica for issuing it and giving us, 90 years later, a chance to experience a little of that which Ernst Leitz based his decision at 12:30 on that fateful day (and against the advice of most attending the meeting) to move forward on Barnack's camera in spite of all the nay sayers! To me this camera is the holy grail of Leica cameras and we a blessed with its existance, reasonable price and availability.
konradhorst Posted April 26, 2010 Share #12 Posted April 26, 2010 I have the previous 0-Serie too and I use it just for fun. The viewfinder is great. Buy it, use it and have fun.
christoph_d Posted April 26, 2010 Share #13 Posted April 26, 2010 Hi Proenca, I have no idea whatsoever if this is a good investment. Being the owner of a previous edition of this replica (the one with the folding gunsight thing), however, I am smitten with the little camera, not for having it on the shelf, but for using it regularly. The lens is very nice indeed, the "user interface" is a disaster to get used to, the photographic results can be stunning and the whole package a lot of fun. Best regards, Christoph
