kenneth Posted September 30, 2008 Share #1 Posted September 30, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Further to my previous post about an M2 body to use in conjunction with my M6 someone suggested I might look at an M4-P. I read about the specification and it appears to have the same framelines as my M6 which means it will accommodate my 75mm lens as well as my 35 and 50mm. The prices do not seem much different to the M2. The only slight disadvantage being that they are mostly black, but I guess I could put up with that as performance is the main criteria Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Hi kenneth, Take a look here Leica M4-P ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
luigi bertolotti Posted September 30, 2008 Share #2 Posted September 30, 2008 If you prefer chromes (and I AGREE COMPLETELY... ), I have noticed that, searching around, chrome M4-P aren't so rare (I thought of buying one for 1 year or so, before M8 arrival... ... and scouted a lot the market). Many of the chromes are "70 years" commemorative... it seems even than they are commoner than the standards (seem to remember 2500 "70 years", 1500 chromes or so, and, ok, >20000 blacks). Presently a dealer in my town has one for sale (70 years), at a price only 100-200 Euros more than blacks advertised in European sites... I saw it last Saturday and still felt a little temptation... mole73 Posted September 30, 2008 Share #4 Posted September 30, 2008 Hello Kenneth, my brother is a proud owner of a silver M4-P from the 70th-anniversary-edition. It is a very nice camera and a practical one, too. For me the only disadvantage may be the missing TTL-metering. But if you have one body with the metering, than it shouldn´t be a real disadvantage. Hope you will find one, Robert

kenneth Posted September 30, 2008 Author Share #6 Posted September 30, 2008 It looks as though black ones are less expensive and as I am planning to use it as opposed to buying it to collect I think I might bite the bullet and go black. I have never had a black camera and it might look OK with my 35-50mm lenses which are chrome- I tell a lie, I had a Nikon F2AS which was black but I did not keep in very long and part exchanged it for a chrome Nikon F3HP- but thank you to those who have sent posts about chrome models

kenneth Posted September 30, 2008 Author Share #10 Posted September 30, 2008 Given a choice (which I never have been) I would always go for a black camera. I choose chrome mainly because black cameras look as though one is trying to be a professional photographer, which I am not- In this case for financial reasons only, I may change the habit of a lifetime
JBA Posted October 1, 2008 Share #11 Posted October 1, 2008 Funny about our preferences for chrome or black and how we rationalize these preferences. I'm with Andy. I prefer black cameras by far, to the point of having an almost irrational dislike for chome cameras. In fact, I just don't like how conspicuous chrome cameras are by comparison. Kenneth, your "trying to look like a pro" argument would never enter my head. In any case, we like what we like for whatever reason.

Guest maddoc2003jp Posted October 1, 2008 Share #13 Posted October 1, 2008 If you go for the silver chrome M4-P, I would recommend the version with the brass top-plate and recessed windows. Otherwise, the M4-P is very fine camera. I have sold my MP(and M6TTL) in favor of the M4-P. I do not think I will ever part with my M6 Classic in chrome and I include a shot taken by my wife of myself+M6 and our daughter with my old OM2n cased. I do not know why she insists on carrying it cased but there again I am not 26. The weekend in Scarborough was wonderful, a great bonding time with Jen. Scarborough has some great photographic potential and I can recommend it Welcome, dear visitor! Scarborough has some great photographic potential and I can recommend it Kenneth, that is a very nice shot of you, your daughter and your M6 ! Of course I would never recommend you to part with a camera that you like. I made the mistake once, by selling my first M4-P Two weeks later I was lucky to find another one in very good condition My case with the MP ... Well I bought it for a trip to Canada, my first time visiting the American continent. I tested the camera for a couple of month and shortly before the trip, I realized the MP's faulty shutter, electronics and some other things. While the MP spent some time at Leica for service, the M4-P went with me to Canada and I got all the shots that I wanted. BTW, the M6 classic (silver chrome) was my first Leica ever Cheers, Gabor
Guest maddoc2003jp Posted October 1, 2008 Share #16 Posted October 1, 2008 I forgot to mention something .... If you really prefer silver chrome Leicas, with the same style levers as your M6 classic, and don't need the 75mm FL, the M4 might be a better alternative for you. 28mm can be used using the whole VF window and the VF is nearly optimal uncluttered and flare-free. Photoskeptic Posted October 1, 2008 Share #18 Posted October 1, 2008 To the question of black or chrome: I've had both. I think of the black M's as "pretty boys", and as such attract more attention. They also look newer. The chromes otoh, look older, less pretentious and are less likely to get into trouble. Just my 2 cents.

Just my 2 cents. I entirely agree. Black, I think looks a little pretentious, whereas chrome looks reserved discreet and understated which is the epitome of what I believe it is to be English. I like Porsche motor cars but I would never have a black 911. I also like fine wristwatches but would not been seen in a Breitling watch. Although superbly made they are very showy. But when push comes to shove black ones are certainly cheaper than chrome and in the current financial climate it just might have to be black
andybarton Posted October 1, 2008 Share #20 Posted October 1, 2008 I'm a black amateur. And proud of it. In Kenneth's poll land ... looks reserved discreet and understated which is the epitome of what I believe it is to be English See photo above, taken in Scarborough Only kidding, Kenneth!
