Summaron 2.8 with googles

I'd like to know what is required to remove the googles from the Summaron 2.8. I know the 2 screws need to be removed, but don't know if any other work needs to be done. Is there a best tool or process to remove the screws? I don't want to injure the goggles, but would like to try the lens on my M2 and CL without the added weight, as I very much like the look this lens renders. Thanks for the help once again. Ben

Hi Ben,

Unless I am very much mistaken, on the M2 the goggled Summaron will bring up the 50mm framelines. The goggles were designed to do that on the M3, then convert the lines to 35mm.

Regards,

Bill

Thanks Bill. I will assume that there is no way to use the Summaron except with an external finder or just to find where the 35 lines are outside the 50 framelines. I'm so used to the small package of the M3/M2 with my 35 pre-asph and 50 'cron collapsible. I would like to include the Summaron for use in the subway, as it gives a cool glow and bring a different rendering to the images. Thanks again. Ben

There was a thread recently on similar lines, basically you cannot remove the goggles from the lens and use on an M2 etc. the cams are different and the rangefinder will not give accurate focus.

Hi Ben,

A flat screw driver! :D

But don't do that.

This lens is especially made for the M3 which doesn't have any 35mm frame.

It works on the M2, but the view trough the viewfinder is a little bit smaller as with a 35mm without googles.

It's still a very good lens, you can enjoy on your M2 or M6/7/8. ;)

As Gerry correctly says above - when the goggles are removed, you will no longer be able to use the rangefinder accurately. You will also need a separate viewfinder or, will have to key in the 35mm frame manually. The focusing cam is designed with a different slope, and will only indicate accurate focus at infinity.

If you still wish to remove the goggles - a flat screwdriver will do the trick. Make sure it matches the screws exactly, so that you do not damage them. Once the two screws are removed, you will have to gently pry the goggles off; there are two locating pins, which will make it somewhat difficult. Sometimes Leitz also use a light adhesive for extra security to attach the goggles to the lens mount.

I will include a picture of a Summaron 2.8/35mm, with the goggles removed - you will see the locating pins. This lens also had a factory LTM to M mount adapter, yours could be of the same design....

Best,

Jan

I can confirm - I have a 3.5 Summaron with removable goggles (I naver have been able to figure out why Leica made a version with removable goggles....) and it will utterly misfocus without them. Only at infinity ( where it is locked without goggles, but there is an unlocking trick) will it be correct.

Gentlemen, thanks for the education. Is there a Summaron 2.8 without the goggles that would focus correctly on the M2 and do you have any idea of the relative value to the goggled one? It sounds like I may need to sell this great lens to purchase the non-goggled version. It is a Leitz Wetzler f 2.8. 35 Summaron Chrome SN 1922727. It is in MINT condition. I paid $386 from a dealer in Europe in January of this year. Does anyone know anything about goKevincameras or a reputable source for this lens? Not many of them available to my eye for the M2. Just to open a can of worms, can the 35 cron be used to get the same softer look as the summaron? I have been using the Summilux 35 pre-asph and love it, but want another tool that gives a different signature, not as creamy and a bit more aged. Am I off my rocker? Thanks, Ben

Yes, the ones without googles. But wait a minute...

 What ? US$ or was it €uro ?

Then in $ this was a real bargain. Even cheaper as a f/3.5 35mm with googles.

Why not looking for a Summicron 35 then ? It's not creamy but very good. Or a Summaron f/3.5. You could try an exchange with your googled one..

The only reason for the goggles' removability on the 3.5 Summaron was ease of storage. Early Leica compartment cases had a special slot for the goggles. The trick it to depress the little pin on top of the lens mount when the goggles have been removed.......

  • 8 years later...

The M2 version of the 2.8 Summaron are available, but I watched for several months to find mine from KEH. I notice they show one in "bargain" condition available now:

https://www.keh.com/shop/leica-35mm-f-2-8-summaron-chrome-wetzlar-m-mount-lens-39.html

I paid a bit more for one rated Excellent, so this is what you can expect.

I have a goggled Summicon for my M3, and the Summaron on my M2, and I prefer the images from the Summaron.
