zeitz Posted August 29, 2012 Share #3 Posted August 29, 2012 Papers are a personal choice. One man's favorite is another man's trash. I use Espon Exhibition Fiber. I love its surface and max black density (d-max). I also use Hahnemuhle papers, which I certain strengths depending on the photo. I also love Picorico High Gloss White. Many people hate it. I believe Peter Lik also uses it, seeing a print unmounted at one of his outlets. There is no sharper, glossier media. I say media because it is white plastic. There is no paper content. I hate Batyra (whatever the spelling is) papers. I print with both a Canon i9000 Pixma (dye ink) and a Canon iPF5100 large format printer (pigment ink). Bottom line, buy some small packages and try them all.
zeitz Posted August 29, 2012 Share #4 Posted August 29, 2012 One other comment. Unless you have a graphics monitor that is profiled and calibrated, you will never print with total success. I use a Spyder 3 Elite. My monitor and printer profiles match very closely in color. The only issue that still plagues home printing is "prints too dark". David Brooks writing in Shutterbug says it is the monitor brightness setting that is often too bright. That is part of the answer. But even set correctly, prints darkness can vary depending on the paper / paper profile. (Colors vary a bit too.) Once you pick your paper, you have to know how to set brightness in Photoshop. I use +18 for Hahnemuhle photo rag and +40 for Pictorico.
pedaes Posted August 29, 2012 Share #5 Posted August 29, 2012 I am using Epson Traditional for colour and B&W. It is very impressive -there is a review on Luminous Landscape that might help. Certainly suggest you try. I took a file to a session run by Fotospeed for them to print on their calibrated printer/paper (Baryta) and the print didn't have the depth or tones of the Epson paper. Al Leb Posted August 30, 2012 Share #6 Posted August 30, 2012 I'm using Epson Mat Archival for my B & W test prints with QuadTone RIP and Epson R2880. Cheap and of good quality.
Jaqui Posted August 30, 2012 Share #7 Posted August 30, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have used it, Premium Gloss, but I found it no different from it's cheapo concurrence products.
peterbengtson Posted August 30, 2012 Share #8 Posted August 30, 2012 I use Epson ultra premium photo paper luster finish for everyday use and Epson Exhibition for critical and display prints. Epson stock profiles for both in Lightroom on Epson 3800 and 4800. I have made custom profiles with my xrite Colormunki but cannot see any improvement over the stock Epson profiles. If printing black and white in ABW mode the normal setting seems best rather than the default darker setting.
pedaes Posted August 30, 2012 Share #9 Posted August 30, 2012 For clarity - I think Epson Exhibition is the USA name, and is same as Traditional in UK.
250swb Posted August 31, 2012 Share #10 Posted August 31, 2012 My favourite with my R3000 is Canson Baryta Photographique. For a more 'arty' finish I also use Hahnemuhle Matt Fine Art. Steve
Leicakillen Posted August 31, 2012 Share #11 Posted August 31, 2012 On my Epson 3880 i use Epson Heavy Weight Matte Paper, but even better is PermaJet Matt Plus 240. The blacks on the PermaJet are supperior compared to the Epson paper, highly recommended! /Anders

IWC Doppel Posted October 11, 2012 Share #13 Posted October 11, 2012 I have just picked up a 3880 and looking forward to using. I will print mostly B&W and would appreciate any additional advice regarding affordable A2+, A3 paper in the UK. I will be experimenting a little so want a good representative matt paper to start, The fine art looks a little costly. Also any good suppliers ? I will be experimenting a little so want a good representative matt paper to start, The fine art looks a little costly. Also any good suppliers ? Good luck with your 3880, it will produce wonderful BW prints for you! I am very happy with mine. I use a matt paper called PermaJet Matt Plus 240, very cheap and with a much "blacker" black than Epson Heavymatt. Regards /Anders
