I have an opportunity to purchase a Elmar 50mm f/2.8, the new version. Are there any Leicaphiles out there that currently use this lens? If so, what results have you had with it? Thanks for any feedback.

Hi - I have one and like it a lot. It has a lovely quality which I would say is smoother than my 50 summicron with rich colour rendition.

Yes great lens indeed very sharp, smooth bokeh, great results at short distance but very contrasty lens as well so beware of blown highlights if you use it with a DRF.

I own a variety of Leica 50mm lenses and always come back to the Elmar (in both old [3.5/50 red scale] and new incarnation [Elmar-M 2.8/50]). Whenever weight is of concern to me, this is the lens I use. The current version is razor sharp, contrasty and has good color saturation, plus it is almost immune to unwanted reflections. You will like it.

Use mine a lot. Had a 70x100cm done from a shot done with the M8, Holds up great. It is a fantastic lens for it's price, even new. Get one before it is officially canceled and become ridiculously expensive.

Very sharp without the harsh look so many of the ASPH have.

 

That and a 90 Macro Elmar, 35 IV Summicron is my go to RF kit.

Too slow for such a short focal length for me. I would expect equal, or better, performance with my Nikkor 50/1.4 of 50 'lux at 2.8, but they have a two extra stops when needed.

Aside from the special one sold with Leica M6J, the current Elmar has no focus tab.

I like the focus tab on my Summmicron , could a focus tab be installed on the Elmar?

I bought this lens in the summer. It is very small and light and a very good companion for the M6. I prefer it over the current f2 summicron I used to own. Its rendering and transition to OOF areas is very nice and it is contrasty. I've used it with velvia 100 though to good effect.

Not by Leica AFAIK but perhaps good craftsmen (or women) can do it i don't know.

IMO, it really doesn't need one. It's pretty well perfect as it is. I focus with the side of my finger, rolling it to and fro under the lens.

I use cable-ties on lenses w/o tabs. It helps prefocusing w/o looking through the VF or lens scales.

Hi Bill, matter of tastes of course. I myself much prefer the tabbed M6J version to a point where my current black Elmar tends to stay on the shelf. I would favour a concave tab though as i prefer using my curved forefinger to focus.
