Hello friends. I am going to give a go at changing curtains in a M3 double stroke. Dont worry - I have "some" camera repair experience. Does anyone know of some good online content that deals with operating on M3's. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all, Henry

Thank you Giordano. What a great resourse that m2 guide is. Is it safe to say that the inside of the m2 is pretty close to the inside of a m3 when it comes to a curtain job.

henjenn, are you by any chance related to Rip Tragle? ;)

No Im not related to him ...... or is this ( Rip Tragle ) some clever inside name you call guys like me who are dumb enough to attempt camera repair with minimal experience? LOL

By the way I know the seriousness of this feat. Im not arrogant enough to believe that this is just some easy fixer upper. Im looking at this repair like a mountain climber looks at Everest. Thats why Im really trying to get as much info from all you professionals before I crack this thing open. Thanks again to you all. Anymore online content that any of you know about for working on M3's. I already purchased on Ebay the factory repair guide for M3. I hope its illustrated. Cheers, Henry

No I am the Rip Tragle who is indeed dumb enough to dig into this stuff. Actually,

when I was using my M-3 way back when I did get a repair manual and took it apart

to paint it. And, I believe you can do a curtain job! Good luck buddy!!!!

Hey Rip ...... Thank you for the encouragement. It really can be a bummer when everyone tells you "you cant" or "you shouldnt". Rip did you fing the factory guide to be sufficient?

No, It wasn’t a factory manual but a repair guide published by some fellow who supplied

repair guides for a lot of mechanical cameras of the time… 60’s and down if I remember

correctly…. and I do not remember his name… but he had adds in all the photo magazines

of the time. I’ll betcha such is still floating around e-Bay or somewhere on the web.

I’ll nose around a bit and if I find something I’ll let you know.

Just ignore the nay-sayers: and full speed ahead! Excelsior!

Hello Henry,

Welcome to the Forum.

Notice how the quality of the rubberized cotton in the shutter curtains is somewhat better than some other curtains you might have worked w/ before.

Best Regards,

Michael

Actually Michael I have no idea what you are talking about....... I won one of those M3 repair manuals from ebay and Im going to wait for it to come in before I start anything, ....... but let me tell you Michael you really got me excited now. I cant wait to handle that rubberized cotton. You will be the first to know when I get ahold of that thing. Cheers, Henry

Henjenn,

I never asked the obvious: why does your (rubberized cloth) shutter curtain need

replacing? My old double-stroke M-3 suffers from deterioration of the view-finder

prism glue.

The M3 has 1 curtain completely torn. Cost about a $150 for just one curtain. So now Im thinking maybe I should buy a broken M3 off of ebay. One with good curtains. This way when I start to break parts and lose them I will have an entire M3 to use for parts. Obviously this is not the cheapest route but Im kind of looking at this as a new hobby. Ive already spent about $400 on tools - ( spanners, leica wrenches, good quality Wiha precision tools, ect. ) So Im really diving into this. I ordered a few different camera repair guides. Im excited. But like I said it seems reasonable that I will need parts. If I order just a curtain .... I know after I open up my M3 to work on it, something bad is going to happen and It will be comforting to have an entire M3 right there for parts.

What I cant seem to find is any info on how to do a basic CLA. I found great instructions on replacing curtains but I need to know what to lube and what to adjust, and what lubes to use. Neither of the guides I have are very clear on this topic. Also the lubes that are mentioned I believe are like 50 years old and not around anymore. I wish there was a guide called "How to CLA your M3" ( wishful thinking ). Thanks again to all of you.

henjenn,

I admire your attitude and willingness to TRY SOMETHING. Me too … I have

many things I bought as a whole for one unobtanium part!

The best of luck to you and keep us posted on your projects!!!!

Personally, I enjoy every bit of it! Cheers!

p.s. Money is small and has nothing to do with what you are about and care about doing,

Rip thanks for your wisdom. Good stuff. I showed my wife your comment about money ........ she huffed and left the room. LOL

Anyway as you know I purchased on ebay a copy of Leicas M3 factory guide. I have pretty much all the tools the guide suggests. What Im confused about is a tool the guide refers to often called the "Spring Tension Guage". Does anyone know what this is. I think its a torque screwdriver. The guide wants me to "Tension the shutter with the spring tension guage to 19 to 20". Thats all it says. Please help decipher this. Thanks to you all. Henry

Shutter curtains in my M3 got 'sticky' after about 30 years, started slowing down the shutter travel on the first shot after not being used for a little while if the shutter had been left cocked. New curtains needed, well worth it, an old body would have old curtains!

Also taught me not to leave the shutter cocked if I put the camera away, which also helps battery life with the M6
