For those considering the purchase of this lens and concerned about the reported 'nervous, busy or hectic' bokeh with foliage, I shot a bunch of frames yesterday. Mostly at F1.4 or F2 and a small number at F4. I tried to show the bokeh both in front of and behind the subject and at a variety of subject differences, looking for subtle as well as dramatic examples.

This gallery is composed of shots which are of nugatory creative value but might be useful to some people. The images are largely lightly processed (and only in LR3) and some have had a bit of a crop. I exported them at full post-crop size and Adobe RGB, 91% JPEG quality.

I'm liking the bokeh better now that I've stopped exploring its weaknesses and started allowing its more subtle strengths to come through...

Thanks for taking the time to do this, Tim. The overall signature - including bokeh - of this lens is very appealing IMHO.

If I were in the market for a fast 35 (I'm presently sticking with my old ASPH - having not experienced the epic focus shift that you and others had to deal with) this would go straight to the top of my list.

Sharpest part of image seems to be the paving bricks near the cycle prop and left pedal. Would that be equidistant from the saddle (presumed focus point)?

The POF was on the top part of the chain where it is tied under the saddle... focussed there and then recomposed...

What do we have to do to get some 100% crops of the focused area at f/1.4? I am yet to see anyone post this.

go to the gallery that contains them

click on any thumbnail to view it then mouse over the left hand side of the image (or control click on it or right click) and choose the option to Download Original. All the files are available as 90% quality JPEGS, which I exported form LR after developing and cropping the DNG. So they're not as good as the true original but they are easily good enough to judge focus from.

Please do remember though that this thread is about bokeh, not focus and sharpness. I have other recent threads about that, and there are plenty of examples provided with ability to make 100% crop comparisons...
