TDR Posted August 6, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 6, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have been happily shooting with my 18mm Elmarit on my M8. I have been using the Leica UV/IR filter made for that lens (part #13422). I just ordered an M9. Is there a Leica UVa filter (without the IR) designed for that lens? I can't seem to find one. Advertisement Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 Hi TDR, Take a look here UVa for 18 mm Super Elmarit. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lars_bergquist Posted August 6, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 6, 2010 It seems that you will have to use the filter adapter with a 72mm lens. On the other hand, the combination of the screw-in hood and a front cap will protect your lens mechanically fully as well as a filter, and there will be no photographic benefit from using one, either. Leica lenses have been opaque to hard UV since the 1960's, when improved lens cement and coatings were introduced. TDR Posted August 10, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted August 10, 2010 Thanks for your replies to my question. I checked with B&H, which confirms that there is no UV-only equivalent of the UVa/IR filter for the 18. But the rep said that continuing to use that UVa/IR filter on the M9 would not affect my photos. The advice I've seen in other posts here has been that you should not use the IR filters with the new M9, which has the built-in IR filter that most cameras have. So, will it make any difference in my pictures if I keep using the Leica IR filters on my lenses on the M9? Tim
cbretteville Posted August 10, 2010 Share #6 Posted August 10, 2010 You wouldn't want to keep the uv/ir filter on the SE18 while shooting full frame, it vignettes _a lot_. As for other lenses, normals to teles shouldn't be an issue. Wide angles will give you varying degrees of colour vignetting depending on how wide the lens is. Carl Just found this thread, so I know I'm late. Are you saying that the Leica filter #13422 which is made for the SEM 18 vignettes? It is just beyond me, with the M9 having been out for 2-3 years now, that Leica has not come with UVa filter for the SEM 18 for use with the M9! cbretteville Posted November 5, 2011 Share #8 Posted November 5, 2011 There is a filter holder that fits the 18 and allows the use of 77mm filters. The Leica item number is 14484.
