rsh Posted April 21, 2010 Share #2 Posted April 21, 2010 Looks really nice.
zlatkob Posted April 22, 2010 Share #3 Posted April 22, 2010 The price is shown as 3,750 Euros "RSP in Germany incl. VAT". Does that mean the price will be about $5,000 in the US, or will it be lower without the VAT?
dpattinson Posted April 22, 2010 Share #4 Posted April 22, 2010 (edited) Looks very good, but at that price I'll be waiting for a second hand one Edited April 22, 2010 by dpattinson
Jerry_R Posted April 22, 2010 Share #5 Posted April 22, 2010 Hmmm, someone screwed up - the whole pricelist is visible in that directory including all the new S lenses Some information for dealers too...

ho_co Posted April 22, 2010 Share #7 Posted April 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) First time they've used the term "optical design has been optimised for the use in combination with digital Leica M cameras," isn't it?
40mm f/2 Posted April 22, 2010 Share #8 Posted April 22, 2010 not tempted 330g (previous 255g)
Ozkar Posted April 22, 2010 Share #9 Posted April 22, 2010 The old 35/1.4 ASPH weighs 320g not 255g. Leica Camera AG - Photography - LEICA SUMMILUX-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH. not tempted 330g (previous 255g)
adan Posted April 22, 2010 Share #10 Posted April 22, 2010 The price is shown as 3,750 Euros "RSP in Germany incl. VAT". Does that mean the price will be about $5,000 in the US, or will it be lower without the VAT? Subtract the VAT (19% in Germany(?)) to get the base price, then convert that to dollars. = approx. €3,150 without VAT or (assuming $1.34 per €) about $4,221 + whatever sales tax is involved. Which seems low - the current 35 'lux ASPH is $4,495. But maybe my source on German VAT is wrong. Or maybe Leica found a way to economize somewhere in the manufacturing. I guess we'll know soon enough. Otherwise - a little pudgier near the lens mount (46mm max. diameter vs. 43 for the old lens) - probably to make room for the extra helical to float the rear elements - but the same length as the old. andybarton Posted April 22, 2010 Share #11 Posted April 22, 2010 First time they've used the term "optical design has been optimised for the use in combination with digital Leica M cameras," isn't it? This is the end of a very long era. Sad day for everyone if they have compromised the use of the lens on most of their cameras. That's what's being implied here. leica007 Posted April 22, 2010 Share #12 Posted April 22, 2010 what will be the GB Pound price, any idea?
JWW Posted April 22, 2010 Share #13 Posted April 22, 2010 Optimizing for digital seems a fair goal since digital is more critical than for film so the design standards and tolerances need to be higher. The old 35mm was fine for film, it was when people started using them for M8s when the focus shift became an issue.
aesop Posted April 22, 2010 Share #14 Posted April 22, 2010 ...someone really screwed up in Kiev.
adan Posted April 22, 2010 Share #15 Posted April 22, 2010 (edited) Andy, not to worry - I think that that phrase is used in the context of digital being less forgiving of focus shift (mentioned in the context of the 35 'lux ASPH many times here) and reduced IQ at close distances when we blow the blerry images up to 100% pixels onscreen. With the exception of lenses designed only for APS-cropped formats, there is nothing in digital optimization that makes lenses worse for film use, except that they may be larger for a given image area to accent "telecentricity" (Witness the lenses for the original 4/3rds format or the large (for the sensor size) lens on the Digilux 2). And whether they said so or not, obviously Leica has been designing M lenses with digital considerations in mind as far back as the WATE - and, personally, I suspect as far back as the 28 Summicron. _________ (BTW, I notice suddenly I am just 5 posts away from the "Big 3K" - I guess I better reserve that one for something especially worthwhile.... ) Edited April 22, 2010 by adan
andybarton Posted April 22, 2010 Share #16 Posted April 22, 2010 Well, we will see. We have no idea when we will get the chance to eat the pudding to find the proof though...
luigi bertolotti Posted April 22, 2010 Share #17 Posted April 22, 2010 The price was predicted rather right... http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/117857-new-summilux-35mm-asph.html And a dealer already spoke of a "digital optimized design"... which I think is indeed simply related to the issue of focus... none used to speak of focus shift at film's times... Fine they have made a metal hood; pity that the RFF post doesn't display the lens design (not even the number of elements)
lars_bergquist Posted April 22, 2010 Share #18 Posted April 22, 2010 What a pity they are persevering with those irritating cheapo screw-in hoods. I will be doing quite a lot of swearing every time I want to use a polariser. Why can't Leica put decent bayonet hoods on their lenses, just like everybody else? With that price, we should have got a reasonable lens hood, if we can get one when we buy a 'Voigtländer' lens for a quarter of the money. But never mind. I have been queuing for that lens for several weeks now, sleeping on the pavement, and I won't give up my place in the line. A quick question : what would you do if you had : - A Summicron 35 Asph - A Summilux 50 of 1963 - perfect - and no other (newer) 50 ? (supposing you are in the mood to buy ONE lens ?)
