What half case do you use?

I have found the following for the M8

1. Leica's own

2. Luigi - Italian

3. Luxecase - Korean

4. Artisan&Artist - Japanese

Luigi's is most expensive and surprising Leica's own the cheapest.

From a search on here most seem to have the Luigi one. Any users of the other half cases? Are they inferior? Or just as good at a slightly better price?

A camera case may improve the grip but I doubt that it does much to protect the camera. I bought one from Mr. Zhou as a test and haven't used it much. A small piece of skate board grip tape placed where my thumb normally rests on the back of the camera works just fine.

A Luigi case is very special and every M deserves one. It really does improve the grip (as long as you don't have very small hands) and my version accommodates the 'Thumbs-Up' too. It feels great, it's lovely to look at and is a rare example of true handcraftsmanship in this modern hi-tech, throwaway world.

Contrary to one poster's comment, a Luigi case truly does protect your camera (and its LCD screen). In 2007 I invested in the full Luigi case after damaging my M8 in a fall (I know ... closing the stable door after the horse has bolted). Since that episode the case has regularly taken a beating but the camera and screen are pristine still.

The short nose full case happily encloses all but one of my lenses including a Summarit 90mm with its hood reversed. The exception is my 24mm Elmarit with its wide rectangular hood - too wide for the case, though no doubt Luigi would modify the nose if you asked him - that's what buying a Luigi case is all about - personal service and attention to detail.

Incidentally, the full case provides good weather protection. I carry my camera around my neck on bicycle or horseback in dust, rain and snow. It never gets dirty or wet inside. I can flip down the nose in a second to take pictures, or remove it in a moment.

Finally, hidden inside a Luigi case (which is a little oldie worldie, especially when its looking a bit vintage as mine is already) I sense the camera is less attractive to opportunistic rogues - they don't give it a second glance.

Do you not find the front part of the full case cumbersome? Or does it come right off and converts into a half case?

Any pics of it in use rather than static ones

Hi' there,

The front part slides in and out of the half-case in an instant using Luigi's rather ingenious all leather slide. Two years continuous use shows no sign of wear (other than the attractive burnishing of polished leather). Dropped down but still attached, it is just occasionally cumbersome, in which case I slide it off. I have a small crocodile clip on a belt chain to hold it while I take pictures.

To open the full case requires a quick, intuitive thumb flip on the press studs and the front drops down. Similarly, two studs drop the back flap for viewing the LCD screen if required. These actions become completely second nature and take a split second.

Go here for some pictures of my Luigi case: M8-and-Luigi-for-Web-001 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! . With constant handling it's original 'Rally' colour has darkened (in my view attractively) and there are many dings and scratches that'd otherwise be on my camera (these marks are transitory in the high quality Italian leather - they fade away mysteriously, to be replaced by newer ones). Note the 'Thumbs-Up' slot in the case.

Attached is an image from Luigi's website (Leicatime Luigi Crescenzi : leica cameras leica compur mp elmar 250 reporter leicavit) which shows partially the clever slide mechanism. It seems like the upper case is sewn into the bottom of the lower case, but it isn't. It slides very satisfyingly out of a leather slot running along the bottom of the camera. No clips needed - the leather grips tightly to itself.

I have a Luigi half-case with hinged flap. It does its job very well and protects the camera body from bumps and scrapes, as well as looking good. Not cheap but far more practical than the Leica 'ever ready case' which is great for protection but not so good when taking pictures. And I think the Luigi half-case gives more protection than Leica's own 'protector'.

has anyone found the optional stainless screw for Luigi case useful?

Yes, it is useful when you need to use a tripod but don't want the faff of getting the half-case off first. In other words, its good for occasional use. For serious tripod work, then of course, the Luigi case has to come off.

The screw is beautifully flush with the leather and looks good. Its also easy to use for securing and removing the case. However, I sometimes have a problem releasing the screw from the tripod. It unscrews from the camera instead, leaving tripod and case firmly locked together! Judicious use of a long-nose pliers is then required.

This isn't a problem with a case of Medoc however - that works every time.

thank you for the info. I have ended up using an L-bracket that doesn't fit over the case, so my screw has been redundant. I was curious if anybody used the screw for something besides connecting to a tripod.

i am using the luigi-case set:

halfcase with sliding long nose cover, and the screw for tri-pod. even, i have not used a tripod yet, i like the screw. it just feels natural, to fix the case with a screw. i love the leather (ralley), the looks and the feeling. it adds to the weight, but i guess that's ok.

and one of the readers said it right:

it does not attract a second view.

my m8 looks just like an old camera, compared to all the high-tech gear around. people just look at it and forget it. except a few nice "nerds" who know what they see... from these people, i get some attention.

luigi is reliable and his products are just brilliant. passion for details. even the box, in which the case was delivered was nicly made. and he added a hand-written yellow-sticker, to tell me, how to use the screw together with a tripod.

luigi-case: highly recommended.
