For those who might find Dan Margulis' very comprehensive book on Lab colour mode - shall we say a touch daunting, there is a very good introduction to Lab colour space/mode in chapter 11 of Scott Kelby's excellent and very readable book "CS4 for Digital Photographers". Even the early chapters which cover pretty familiar territory to most of us, contain little gems here and there, which we may not have known or forgotten about.

Thanks. Sounds like the one I'm thinking of (3.5x2" ).

Are you able to use that size to set manual WB within the M9 (i.e., take picture of card with M9 when set to manual WB)?

Yes, even with the 21mm you can do it. There's a mark in the center when the WB is set manually, and you can see that if the grey card is within that (or actually just some of the grey card), it is set.

So you go 15-20-30 cm close to the grey card and set it (don't move the grey card to the camera as the grey card is supposed to catch the light you are WBing after)

I'm with Lars. Reading this makes me realize why I love black and white! ;)

Seriously, though, the idea that only perfect color will do, in a situation where the room is lit by a combination of sky light, tungsten, and florescent of unknown parentage, and the sources mix differently in different positions--that is my definition of photographer's hell. Move over, Sisyphus...
