Why not an "I love my M7" thread?

I sent my 13 yr old M7 off to Leica Ginza in March to have a few things changed....the MP-styled levers, a leather replacement, conversion to optical DX reading, but most of all was the engraving of my dad's signature as he passed away last year. I doubt my digital Leicas would last so thought the M7 would remain in the family passed onto the next generation.

I finally got my M7 back an hour ago (6 months!) and am very happy with the work they've done on it.

A real beauty and a wonderful tribute. Thanks for sharing!

Cheers,

Forgive my stupidity but what is optics DX reading?

[emoji275] 35mm cassettes have a graphic code printed on them that indicates, among other things, the ISO of the film.

Early M7s used conductive feelers to read the code; later versions use a laser diode to do the same.

Other things encoded include the film type, number of exposures possible and latitude.

Hi can you help me understand how one can tell if they have new DX reader vs old?

My pleasure. The snapshot below is of the film cartridge side (left side as the camera faces subject). It shows the original (old) version. The vertical line of six expressions in the chamber are mechanical spring-loaded probes that read the conductivity of the ISO pattern on the cartridge. If you run your finger down them you can feel them retract then recover as you do so. I do not have a picture of the later optical sensor. So here you go!

I find it heartening the Leica modified this approach with LEDs reading the cartridge.

Both my M7s have the above, and work well. I'm happy so far.

A minor tip: I brush new cartridges against my shirt to dust them off, and every few weeks check the chamber to be sure the mechanical tips are clean, although I'm not sure it is really necessary.
