Love at first sight!

It does seem to be the case that M7 users don't fetishise their cameras in the way that MP (and M2) users do... It's one of the reasons I like M7s...

Oh yes they do. How could I not?:)

The "I love my MP" is the largest by far in the film forum, with over 3,000 posts.

"I love my M7" is not doing as well, with just over 200 posts.

So for those of you who prefer the M7 over the MP, what are your reasons?

Much of the love for the MP seems related to romantic notions about the perfect or ideal Leica. What is the mentality or perspective that leads one to prefer the M7? Or, on a more practical level, what are your observations or points in the M7's favor?

I prefer the speed dial, the rewind lever, the low light capabilities, the quiet shutter and the convenience to have auto mode, although I prefer the manual mode due to "zen", but it's still nice to have for quick shots. Also flash support is quite nice, although I barely use it. I don't like the filmspeed wheel, but that's a very minor thing. As a Leica lover the electronic nature of the M7 makes me kind of uncomfortable, but that's just nonsense and nostalgia towards mechanical cameras. And I've never heard about it's electronics failing.

What makes the MP interesting to consider? Fully mechanical, but a M2 or M6 does that just as well. I for one don't really like the scratched off paint look the black one has after while.

So yeah, the Leicas I'd take are M7>M6>M2 (I've used most Leicas)

The M7 jcraf posted is pretty much the perfect Leica. I'd take it in black though :p

1. Which of the latter two are available now, new, with full Mfg. warranty? That's what I thought... :)

2. I think a case can be made that the M-A is the only fully mechanical Leica now being made. And a lovely camera it is too.

:D Admittedly, I've never heard of the shutter timing electronics failing but problems with the DX coding are pretty rife (my own misbehaved plenty of times in this regard). Ask KeithM in this forum how he feels about the reliability of the M7 electronics.:D All that said, I agree with you about the utility of the M7 – it is pretty much the shooters' M camera and I often rather wish I still had mine.

My M7 is back at the factory for the fourth time with electronic/electrical faults. Am currently in dialogue with management as to the next step...

Does the UK/EU have something like a "lemon law"? That might strengthen your hand.

Well, it is now on its way back for the fifth time - yes, really. When returned for the fourth time it was agreed with CS that it would be exchanged. An unfortunate break-down in internal CS communications then seemingly took place due to my contact taking a vacation. I won't go into detail here of what has transpired over the last month, but my patience and loyalty to Leica products has been severely tested. Luckily a solution has now been reached and a replacement camera will be sent to me after Easter (my choice, as there is not enough time for one to reach me before I go on holiday). I will refrain from saying more at the moment...

Well Keith, I hope you will enjoy your new M7.

I have worked with a M7 0,58 since 2005 and it only stopped once on the top of the Krkonoše when it was -30C because the Lithium batteries went down. But I could finish my job on the manual shutter times. Heat of +45C on the Black Sea area (Ukraine) without any problems during a wedding.

Krkonoše, extreme weather on Fomapan 400.

Ukraine, wedding of my daughter on Fuji Acros 100. Turkey temperatures.

How funny for the "real' digital photographer for my Acros 100 film exchange. :)

So there is still hope for your M7 love.

Thanks all for the support. Luckily film-wise I can take my MP & IIIg on our holiday, so all is not lost although I will definitely miss the M7's aperture-priority. Hopefully when the replacement does finally arrive it will be a lot more reliable example!

Nothing like -30deg C outside but at least on this particular occasion the M7 briefly behaved itself! From the last film... (Portra 400).
