I have a Nikon SB600 & SB80-DX flash hanging round and was wondering if anybody had been able to use any of these on a M8/8.2 in any way, shape or form?.

Also who uses the SF 58 Leica flash on the M8/8.2 for portrait pics and how do you find it and what your secret settings???? :D

Sean Reid has a typically thorough review of the SF 58 on his site, which requires a small annual fee, but is well worth it...Welcome to ReidReviews. In the review, Sean describes his common flash settings. And, in a related article, he describes in greater detail his techniques on general use of flash.

I don't know about those flashes, but I was told here that my SB-800 Nikon flash would work just fine in "auto" mode. I tried it, and was pleased with the results. I don't use flash that much, but there are times when I need it.

I still need to test it out for "fill-in" flash. I might get the first chance to try that this coming weekend.

Hi, I don't believe that you can use an SB-600 on an M8, as the SB-600 does not have an external sensor for 'Auto' flash mode.

The SB-80DX should be able to be used though. It has an external sensor, and 'Auto' mode. Looking at the manual for this flash, any of the non-TTL modes should be OK, although you must remember that there will be no communication between the camera and the flash, and you will have to transfer settings yourself. This link to the SB-80DX manual may help if you no longer have your copy available. http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/Speedlights/SB-80DX.pdf :)

I use my sb-600 on my M8 with out problems. I don't mount it directly on the hot shoe but rather use the Nikon cord.

Of course none of the ttl capabilities work... its pure manual adjustment of the flash. This is one of the reasons I prefer to use the cable rather than mount the flash on the M8.

The Nikon SB-600,800 and 900 work fine on Leica's hotshoe, even the locking pin. I like to use them with the coiled cord extension to get them off the camera, although that presents problems since I don't have a 3rd hand and I have to focus the Leica.

Frankly the only pain is when the flash sleeps the only way to wake it is either to cycle its power or expose a dark frame. You have to glance at the flash back panel before the shot to make sure it is up...also it seems the only thing that resets the sleep timer is an exposure. I did go into flash settings and turned off sleep, but that killed the batteries way too fast.

Of course they only work in A or M (or SU-4 slave in 800) modes, but having the ability to do some nice fill or bounce is great.

What is REALLY amazing is using the D-LUX 4 with these flashes and getting perfect flash sync up to 1/2000th of a second, thanks to the electronic shutter! Also D-LUX 4 works great one-handed, due to the AF.

I find the locking pin on Nikon's flashes does not engage with the hole in the Leica hot shoe - the screw at the front of the shoe prevents the flash being pushed in far enough. The solution is to file a very small recess in the front of the Nikon foot to allow it to move a fraction of a mm further into the shoe.

I haven't seen Sean's review but the SF58 disappoints me in its build quality and functionality compared to the Nikon SB-900, and that's before you get to the price. The secondary flash and support for GNC are what save the SF-58 but after the quick release foot of the SB-900, the plastic thumb wheel of the SF-58 is positively antedeluvian.

You were spot on Nicoleica with the SB-80DX "Non-TTL auto flash A Mode"....

Works a treat with the M8.2.

You set the ISO (I use 160), the lens (24mm to 105mm) and the f stop (f2.8 to f22).

Set the M8.2 shutter to flash sync and appropriate f stop (as set on the flash) and away you go.

And the flash bounce even works as well.

Love it for "old" Nikon flash. 5 stars from me.....

PS: Only issue is the standby mode. Just need to hit the "on" button and all is fine.

PSS: Just found where I can vary the Standby time or have on permanently..... Bonus.......
