will the m9 kill film?

One of the most salient features of this discussion has been left unsaid. Like all modalities of art, there is a fusion and strong impulses to merge the best features of imaging creation, regardless of the origin. As we get software that allows more & more creative work to be done out of the camera, the source material may indeed become secondary. I shoot an equal amount of film & digital. I shoot a lot. What interests me is to create an image that’s not a copy of reality, but to express what I want others to see. The format is less & les of importance, the end result is the only thing of value. With engineering systems that will soon make a virtual variable lens system available within software, image making will reach a different creative space. Artists won’t be constricted by price & hardware to deliver their images. It’s on the horizon and I’ve witnessed some pretty amazing things in some University labs. It won’t be about film or digital. It will be about imagination.

Good and no trivial speculation, which can arise a lot of discussions on the very basic foundations of PHOTOGRAPHY : has it to tend towards "about imagination" as you point out ? Well, but photo starts as recording of reality, not imagination of... the history of photo tools has been for a long time adressed to this (record - then give to it a touch of imagination) : is its destiny to go far and far away from this basic concept, which makes it unique in respect to other forms of art ?

ok, what i meant was, will the m9 kill film amongst leica users. from what's been said, obviously it won't die. there is a smoothness and charm about film which i know digital can't replicate. digital is just 0 and 1 code/signal. analog is analog.

I have read that in the USA (and presumably western Europe) the M9 has taken the market by storm - it is supposed to be "the" Leica that the vast majority are buying.

However, it's a different story in the Asian market; there, the M9 is said to take a back seat to the M7 & MP in terms of sales of new Leicas.

This says something about the workdview of photographers in Asia regarding the aesthetics of emulsion based images vs. "0" and "1" based images. It also makes a statement about the western mindset, which apparently values instant gratification and whizbang technology above all else.

The M9 seems to provide the quality users expect with the advantage of being 'full-frame', it is therefore on my list.

However will it replace my film photography? No for one simple reason, projection. I have access to £2500 digital projectors that I can only describe as appalling, over-contrasty, inconsistent colour reproduction and they all require that we take our 18mbyte images and reduce them usually to something about 1400 X 900 pixels at best.

I'm getting some great results out of a Panasonic G1 with its native lenses and with M and R series lenses as well. I can print from these images up to around 13 X 10 inches and I use flickr a lot where the results of the Leica glass are just about apparent but projection is hopeless. So despite super products like Pro-Show Producer I'll continue to take relevant photos on slide film and project on the P2002's

I read of Kodak killing color paper for optical printing. Chems for color are increasingly difficult.

B&W film and is getting to be a problem, but is not severe YET.

I don`t send out anything so I see a problem. My Digi Nikons increasingly do the color.

Scanned Fuji 160 or Portra film makes a better color print in my opinion.

I am going to get stuck with a dozen Leica film cameras. There is no way I will "invest" $7000 in a digi RF that will be worth $2000 maybe in 4 years.

Nikon color is not too bad and the price difference is substantial. I just compared a 135 3.5 Nikkor and 135 4.0 Tele Elmar on the D700. The Leica is a hair better maybe. I paid $65 for the Nikkor. The shade for the Leica is more than that.

Now a Leica M9 plus Leica glass makes a better sharper file with better color. No question, but few will notice. we are talking reflex vs rangefinder so if you really like RF, again no choice.

It's kind of funny the M9 convinced me after 20 plus years of shooting to buy a lecia M3 and a 35 1.4 summilux. I was thinking that I would test the "range finder waters" before I got a M9. So far my new baby has been with me and is genitally used everyday along with my D3's /F3T and Canon 5D2(video). So far Im having a blast with the M3 and the 35 1.4 wide angle. I might have bought a M9 but in my neck of the woods none are to be found:(. Will Digital kill film. Not in my life time. In fact Iv made a point to expose all three of my children to "real' photography. Film , B+W darkroom , chemicals..OO.

Start them when there young.

Maybe I view it more simply - but if we keep BUYING film it'll always be available.

For most of us it will involve thinking ahead and buying in bulk, and buying via the web - your corner store won't bother with it.

It's like Hi- Fi gear isn't it. CD's & players made a huge impact on turntables in the late 80's and everyone dumped their record players overnight almost...but after a decade or so people who bothered to know learned it's just more convenient.. not necessarily better - and digital cd's became the music medium for the great unwashed.

And now there is an even greater threat with on-line music file transfers etc - but still there is a huge underground community of manfacturers with interesting to use & good traditional analog Hi-Fi gear. And decent albums are always populating a section of most music shops.

I believe quality and/or interesting film cameras, and film photography will be the same.
