Dlux 4 a system camera?

When I bought the Dlux 4 I was attracted by the statement of the Leica company: the Dlux 4 present it as system camera.

Knowing that the equivalent Panasonic has already an wide angle available my expectation was to have at least the same on the Leica brand. Taking in account that a 24 to 60 mm zoom was less than I had on the Dlux 3 my expectation was to see soon a wide angle and more important a tele attachement. I do not consider a system camera a flash, a viewfinder, an hand grip and bags. From the era of Leica with the 39 screw attachment a system was intended much more than this.

I am a very satisfied D-Lux 4 user, (bought seveal months ago because I cannot afford even a second-hand digital M) and consider its description as a system camera to be misleading, especially to those present who really know what a system camera can be. In fact I would go as far to say that no digital compact should be honestly described as a "system camera" lacking a range of interchangeable lenses, view-finders, etc etc.

Possibly the days of the new "system camera" are over. Things just move too quickly for a small company to introduce and maintain a cutting-edge "system". As soon as something containing electronic components is announced it is out of date. Just enjoy what you have. :)

With the exception, that the LX3 is prepared for the wa-attachment by menu.

At least the zoom is blocked at the wide position, perhaps the distorsion correction is modified too.

Like, uhhh, does anyone actually consider the LX3/Dlux4 a system camera?

About 3 minutes on the 'net and you would realize it is a highly capable pocket camera.

Really...do you believe every advertisment you read/see on TV?

Sorry if I sound blunt, but all you have to do is take one look at the camera and you know that other than a few accessories it is not a 'system' camera.

Vip, you need to unscrew the ring into which the lens cap attaches. You'll find a 45mm thread underneath onto which you can screw the Panasonic 45-46mm converter ring (or the Lensmate/Pandabase option). Once that's in place you can fit all 46mm (system) accessories to your loverly d-lux.

Griffter . thank you so much for the kind, advise .

Of course I do not belive advertisement, but any way I am trusting the Leica camera promise. I am agree with you that Dlux 4 is a beatifull camera that is pocketable, and a good alternative to bigger leica camera, but the promise was different.

I already had a Dlux 3 that I sold. What I get was a much better camera for sensor and lens but lacking in zoom flexibility. The attachement easily can fix this limit.

Jan, I don't have an LX3 so I can't guarantee my answer, but when I raised this question on another forum, an LX3 owner said that the Lens Attachment menu point locks the lens at full wide, disables the flash, writes the new effective focal length into the EXIF, but doesn't introduce any additional distortion correction.

I use the attachment on the D-Lux 4 occasionally and have posted some basic results at http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-forum/76883-d-lux-4-wa-conversion-lens.html. It works fine, but with added distortion and chromatic aberration that require additional post-processing.

Thanks. That was a good project of you, I even have read it.

"Wenn Siemens alles wuesste, was Siemens alles weiss, dann ...."

If GE would know, what GE already knows, then.....

I also use the attachment occasionally. What bothers me as a technician is the screw mount of the camera. Otherwise no complaints, I am a hobby photographer.

What bother me that any way I bought a camera promising to be different from the previous Dlux 3: a system camera and later discover that is different. Of course I can unscrew the ring and adapt another Panasonic attachment but... Why I have to do so? Is clear that the adaptor was not projected for filters only , there are much easier and cheaper way to do. That is the point! Still now the Leica company present Dlux 4 as system camera with the adapter that let it be understood that.....

The advertising is really badly misleading customers!

Okay, has anyone here actually looked what I presume is the Leica add in question?

They say the Dlux4 is expandable JUST LIKE a system camera.

Right below that is a clickable link to all the accessories available for the camera (cases, grip, flash, viewfinder, etc).

Personally I don't find it misleading at all. There are more accessories available than most compact cameras and at nowhere does Leica say the camera IS A system camera.

Sorry...buyer beware. Any manufacturer is going to make their product sound as good as possible. Any exageration here is pretty mild compared to what's out there. It ain't like they're telling you that by drinking this beer you're going to attract all the babes or some such garbage.
