Digilux 3 vs Lumix Prices

At Amazon a new Digilux 3 runs about $2499 (Down $301 from the $2800 list!).

A new Lumix DMC-L1 goes for $1645.

3 year warranty aside, is the firmware on the Digilux 3 worth the extra $845?

And if you shoot RAW, since there's no in-camera processing, is there then any difference at all?

Just curious.

its a good bet that the Leica Digilux 3 prices are somewhat locked to Panasonic L1 prices

Panasonic are one of the largest consumer electronics organisations in the world

it is said that every Japanese home has a Panasonic product

Panasonic marketing has been very successful

they usually engage in a strategy called skimming

the price begins very high, and slowly comes down

the best comparison i can give you is that of the VCR video

prices began at inception at over $1,000, and in the end were at around $100

Leica have to take into account the warranty period which far exceeds panasonic

there are enough D2 owners here that would attest to the worth of that

then there is the additional work done within settings

I was waiting for digilux3, because I want to upgrade my d lux2 . I like too much the pics of the cam, but the cam itself doesn´t arrive in Spain. So I want to a pana-center, to take a look at L1. Big deception :( , is extremely big, and heavy. I´m not a big man 1,70m tall, the cam look designed for those about 1,90m with very, very big hands and Rambo-look :D . so I´ll wait next year products from Leica.

I think Leica must think in the price of their cam made in colaboration with Panasonic. It is no sense to pay 30%-40% plus, only for the red dot, and some adjustement, that you can make yourself. When you buy an L1, you buy an exceptional lenses, made buy Leica, and a box for two years life, I don´t understand to pay more for the same box with some exterior changes. Just my opinion.

actually i dont think its a lot different in size to LC-1/Digilux 2

although the lens is considerably larger, given the OIS onboard

and it looks like they dont intend to market as 'body only'

On some Panasonic forums there is a debate as to whether the Venus III engine does do some processing even in RAW - whether it's true I don't know.

Brian

might be worthwhile to make sure the L1 firmware fix has been applied to D3

and the intent on 'body only' ....or not selling

Riley

The incorporation if the L1 fix is my first question! Body only or with choice of lens (e.g. the 25/1.4) is another.

Hi Brian,

If you do get a chance, the most interesting question for me would be prices for body and lens only. I can probably source a cheap panasonic body if they do plan to split, but my intent is to wait until the 25mm f1.4 comes out next year and use that as my main lens.

just as an aside

i dont think you would have any difficulty selling the fitted lens

i am aware from other circles that Olympus owners are very interested

aided by the fact that its four thirds compatible

It might be interesting to consider resale value. I've seen Digiluxes 2 on e-bay for ridiculous prices, up to 1700$ for a complete set.. Panasonics - I don't know. They don't seem to sell too well.

The firmware upgrade is *absolutely* included in the D3. I have a D3, and it allows burst shooting in RAW mode. Since this was impossible in the L1 pre-firmware upgrade, it's obvious that Leica addressed this issue prior to shipping the D3.

One other thing: The price of the D3 has not dropped --- 2499 USD is the standard price all dealers are charging. That's what I paid at Park Square Camera, that's what Amazon's charging, B&H, etc. Where Amazon comes up with it's "list" prices I'm not sure --- they just want to convince you that you're getting a great deal!

Now the L1, on the other hand, may have come down in price in the few months its been out. I believe when first released it's SRP was 1999 USD.

resale is definately part of the picture

i have seen D2 kits with 'buy it now' prices of US$2,200

generally they are looking for US$1,700

LC-1 come in cheap occasionaly at US$1,000

more often than not US$1,200 +

and as far out as US$1,400 for mint examples with box and all the bits

First to continue the D2 price watch.... the last two I checked on that auction site went for £545 and $1026 whicch is about £570. Of 6 currently listed (this is quite a high number compared with some months ago) the 3 with high starting prices do not seem to be attracting bids.

I went to RGL today and spoke to the Leica rep. who predictably was somewhat vague in his answers.

As Jeffrey said the L1 firmware update is included, and reference was made to it being more "Leica like". Make of that what you will.

I could not get much info about the R lens adapter - price and availability "Spring 2007" possibly at the PMA(?). RGL's view was that there might be a surge of interest in R lenses.

He hoped that the 25/1.4 and the 14-150 OIS would be out by "Spring".

No plans for anything wider than the 14mm currently on offer.

As far as he was aware no plans for an all-black body.

Can use the D2 battery - but slightly shorter life as smaller capacity.

He was equally vague about body-only sales. He did indicate that perhaps an option to select what lens was ordered with the body may be instituted in the future (note the perhaps-es and may-s) when more lenses are available.

He did say it was intended to be a system camera and I got the distinct impression that it or future models would be to the same system, but don't hold me to it! If one looks and the Panaleica lens road map it's going to be 2+ years to get all the proposed lenses onto the market so that makes sense. Whether or not there will be another body in that time - your guess is as good as mine.

All in all not a lot of hard facts - sorry!

Thanks for that Brian. An 'O' Level in vagueness combined with an 'A' level in dissembling appears to be part of the training for a Leica rep, regardless of nationality! Interesting stuff, though.

oh ja

but for wide lens on the D3 you can revert to any of the four thirds system lenses

that includes the very excellent Olympus wides, my fav is the 11-22

these are pro quality sealed lenses, but they dont come cheap

The only reason to spend more is because you want the Leica version, not for a different and or better image quality. Some will buy it because it says Leica, and this is a great reason. I have to admit, I purchased my D1 & D2 over the Pany versions because they said Leica. But not because of any image upgrade.

Continuing impressive photos Fred. I am inclined towards the Leica version, mainly because I prefer the chrome finish which does seem more durable than the black Pana, even if that does make the camera more conspicuous. So to poach onto that other thread, I would be more likely to tape over the Lumix name out of embarrassment! :o
