since i din't get a lot of info on it in the forum i had to buy it.....good excuse isn't it---)))?

i do not have a field test yet, just some street shots. wide open (on the m9) it is sharp almost corner to corner, no color shifts, VERY little distorsion. great lens, beats the WATE@18mm hands down. i bought the zeiss 18mm viewfinder, costs half of the leica one and is very bright. now all i need is a leica M-to-nikon M mount adapter...---)))) peter

Dunno what pushed you to say that, but, since I had both I wouldn't dare say that.

What did you notice between these two lenses to describe such a difference?

Actually I'm sure the Super Elmar is the best 18mm lens in the M system, but both the Zeiss (which I bought last year too) and the WATE are winners.

The Super Elmar, IMO, is a little bit "punching", some pictures seems to pop up. Then it's smaller too. But then (IMO) that's all.

this shot was taken with 18 @ ƒ8

focus in on the chair or far right of sushi bar, not a wise choice on second thoughts, but driven by necessity to have sharpness on sushi chef.

IMHO, this 18 has a bit of a punchier contrast rendering its use a careful matter in contrasty situations. But the beauty of the sensor of the M9 retains information even in darker areas. Distortion is moderate at corners, very.

this is the 24 Elmar 3.8, always at ƒ8

same focus choice.

the corner hehaviour of the 18mm on the M9 is so much better (wide open) than the WATE@18mm. distorsion on the WATE is also worse. don't know the zeiss, just heard it is soft in the corners wide open.

I own the Zeiss 18 and now the Leica 18.

I went for the Leica because yes, I am a gear snob and I love lenses. some like cars, I like lenses.

I am sad to report that my Zeiss is much better on all accounts versus the Leica except for dead center sharpness. I contacted my dealer and I am expecting a replacement.

Hi

The Zeiss 18 viewfinder you are referring to - is this the Zeiss Ikon viewfinder?

thanks

Hmm - distortion on the WATE at 18 isn't that bad. If you look at the tests on FF in the LFI magazine a couple of months ago the WATE came out extremely well.

Have you tried the WATE on the M9? I've been incredibly pleased with mine.

Altough the Zeiss18mm lens is really a top performer, the viewfinder you are refering above is a 21mm finder. Even Ken Rockwell talks about it in his site. Since I own many 21mm finders, I can compare.

The difference between the Zeiss 18mm finder and the Leica 21mm is that the Zeiss shows a higher magnification, thus giving the impression that it is wider but in reality, the they are 21mm framelines. A Pity.

Go with the Leica 18mm finder for an accurate view.

i tried it on the m9, but found the 18mm super elmar soooo much better in the corners. and to have much less distorsion. but anyway, i absolutely dislike bending lines in images and some people are immune to it and could not care less.
