Buying M9 and keeping M8

I have an R-D1s which I find really unique in many ways. It serves well as an addition to my M8. I'm just an amateur and enjoy the differences between both camera. When M9s hit the used market I can justify selling my M8 for an M9 since both will be undervalued. My R-D1s will always hang in there.

Anybody else keeping or selling his/her M8 ?

Regards

I am keeping my M8 for backup because I never had a single problem with it in almost three years. Now I am finally trusting it.

;)

The only drawback is that I will have to keep some IR filters also in the bag.

Also in dusty environment or when there no time to switch lenses, the 28 or 35 on the M9 and the 50 on the M8 will form a nice outfit.

If I ever buy a M9 I will of course keep the M8:

- 180mm Apo-Telyt is the best tele you can exspect for the M

- 120mm f:2 is just great

- 99mm f:2 is unbeatable for close shots

- 24mm Super-Elmar lets me practize using wide-angle, if 18mm are just too wide.

I'll also keep my M8 but these kinds of arguments make no sense. There is nothing unique with the M8 as far as FOV goes. You take an M9 and any lens, crop to the inner 10 MPix and you get the same as with an M8. Same FOV, same resolution. Just higher IQ.

I would also have loved to keep mine for sentimental reasons.

But I want two M9s, and as guidomo says, there really is no useful technical reason for keeping them and putting them in the cupboard and not using them when someone else can get more pleasure out of them.

One is gone . . . the other seems to be going. My big mistake financially was to get the upgrades done - at least on the second body, but at least it'll be nice for someone else!

- I became emotionally attached to my M8 after using it almost every day for three years

Me too, but I know I will use it very few or none at all, like my M6TTL which I havent used it at all since I have M8.

Not that I already have an M9 on order but I've been thinking how practical would it be to use M8 and M9 together - mounting and unmounting the UV/IR filters.

Speaking of which, is it possible to use UV/IR filters with the M9 without adverse effects on the pictures?

There was much debate about it before the M9 arrived but I haven't read about this since. Wondering the same.

Down to what focal length can one use UV/IRs on the M9 without issues? Presumably the issue is more acute on the FF sensor, so is 50mm even OK?

We need someone with an M9 put/leave the UV/IRs on his lenses and shoot a white wall.

Only way to tell if they can stay on. My guess is on 75, 90, 135mm they can stay, 50 perhaps, 35 and below probably not (unless you want to use Cornerfix).

Leica M9 FAQ: I use both the M8 and M9. Can I leave the UV/IR filters on the lenses?

For focal lengths of 35mm and longer, yes. For focal lengths wider than 35mm this is not

recommended, because through the UV/IR filter a color shift will appear in the corners.

REALLY tempted to put mine back on. If there is no impact on the image quality I would prefer to have some protection for the front elements.

Keeping it for the 24mm framelines doesn't make sense to me since the 24 is not really a 24 on the M8, it's a 32mm. And the M9 has both 35 and 28mm framelines.:

Hi Noah- I'm not keeping an M8 for the 24 framelines, but for the 24mm lens. That is I really like the look of the 24 elmarit, I think it has a certain brilliance to it that is unique. I want to frame without an external finder, and I'm fine with the equivalent 32mm FOV. I could even see adding a 24 lux someday for use with the M8, but not so much for the M9 where an external viefinder is needed. best....Peter

Sold the M8.2 and now selling the (very beautiful M8 upgraded - RG Lewis has this and it's a great buy! :)) Both gone with regret, but two M9's just makes sense for the business - exactly the same reasons as Noah's. I now have a core setup of 21/28/35/50/90 + 18 ZM and 135 Apo Telyt so I can go below and above. Also selling on the 75 Cron Asph and the 15CV + Milich adaptor. I know these are lengths I won't want on the full frame. By selling both the M8s I don't need to keep the lenses I'd bought in to make sense of the cropped sensor so I can rake back a bit of money.

Have to say that the M digital experience has been financially the most expensive trip I've ever taken - my Canon 5 Series bodies have been a dream - buy a 5D, use it. By a 5D2 and continue to use both bodies. No problem. No waste... But then there was the 20D/1D2/40D and some other odds and ends that did hurt. Heigh ho - the joy of digital...

Now I understand...it is a brilliant lens.

Chris--I think I'll sell my 75 Summicron too. I never really liked the focal length on film and just got it for the M8. It and my (already sold) 24 Summilux were my main extra costs of M8 ownership. I did fairly well with reselling my M8s, they more than paid for themselves over time. But I kind of wish I hadn't bought the 24 'Lux and the 75 'Cron.

Alas I'm still waiting for my M9s to arrive.

After using my M9 for two weeks I decided to unpack my stashed M8. I was really staggered when I released the shutter of my M8 after two weeks. Now I realize how much I became accustomed to the silent M9 shutter. Although I didn't like the idea of a painted M9 instead of black chrome, I have to admit that the painted M9 has a much smoother touch.

I'm also very certain that I'll keep my M8 for these reasons:

- I don't want to sell my M8 below value after the M9 came into the market

- I'll need a backup camera

- I find the M8 with the faster shutter and the black chrome very unique

- I became emotionally attached to my M8 after using it almost every day for three years

Anybody else keeping or selling his/her M8 ?

Regards

Hi,

the M8 without upgrade is a great camera. The silent mode is enough, when I had to take pictures in concert or theatre. And I use the 3,4/135 as a 180 mm lens in many situations. So the M9 can wait ...
