anyone using the LEICA SUPER-ELMAR-M 18 mm f/3.8 ASPH with the M9?

I have the voightlander 15mm f4.5 and I've use it successfully with my m8. Now I think that this is not the lens for the M9. I'm thinking about the Super-elmar 18mm and my dealer has one in stock. Anyone has worked with it and the M9 together. It looks great and seems to render outstanding.

i agree with your assessment of the CV 15mm, it gives bad corner colors with the m9. tomorrow i shall compare the 18mm leica f3.8 with the WATE and report back.

Unfortunately I can't tell you about the Super-Elmar with the M9, as I don't own the camera (yet...).

 

My experience with the M8 is that the lens is better than the M8-software "thinks". The M8-software (with UV/IR-filter) corrects the cyan drift and vignetting, and my feeling is that there is some overcorrection which may cause some red shift in corners - especially when they are underexposed. The software "thinks" it has to correct more vignetting and cyan drift than in reality caused by the lens (with UV/IR-Filter).

 

With the M9 this should be no issue, as it doesn't need the UV/IR-Filters and accordingly less correction. You could even influence the correction by manually selecting a longer lens: e.g. the 18 or 21mm setting for the WATE or the settings for the 2.8/21 Elmarit.

 

So my advise would be to test the combination with a photo with much bright sky (white clouds) and underexposing. If you notice no red-shift, the lens should work great on the M9: it has enormous sharpness, renders magnificent colours and relatively low distortion.

 

Sean Reid announced, he would test the lens on the M9 in the following months, so you can exspect to learn a lot from his report, if you can wait for it.
