Question with pic I took with the M8

Forgive my ignorance. You buy a camera that costs anywhere from $2500 used to $5999 new and you cannot even use it to make a simple photo indoors without buying extra filters. What am I missing?

The whole evolutionary dead-end M8 experience ;)

Regards,

Bill

JSROCKIT you have hit the nail right on the head, we must put out big dollars because of a mistake Leica made. I happened to have bought my M8 used so no filters, now I must buy filters to correct Leica's screwup. How bloody annoying is that.

...this is a well-documented issue for which Leica took correct remedial steps, hillarystep. I recommend having a quiet word with whoever sold you the outfit - if you bought lens and camera body separately, then you may have to fork out the shekels yourself. Good luck.

...nothing a bit of research wouldn't set straight. I certainly would do my research before parting with that sort of money.

I use uv/ir on all my glass though I only have one that is 6 bit coded (35 cron) on the wide angle side I use a zeiss 25/2.8 and find that it produces beautiful colours with no cyan shift. I have been told that the latest firmware updates have partially solved this problem but I could easily be wrong

When I bought my M8 2 years ago it came with an addendum about the UV/IR filters & how to get the two free ones. Also I was well aware of the necessity to use them before I bought it and this did not require any extensive research.

Google "Leica M8 review" was about all that was required to get all the gory details (and more).

I am most surprised that there is anyone out there that is/was in ignorant bliss on this (minor) issue.

Suilonbow's uncle must have been shooting everything in B&W, therefore not seeing the ill-effects of the sensor. Leica UV/IR cut filters seem to be selling cheap on EBay or at a minimum buy the B+W 486 UV/IR cut filters. BTW, I had some of the best Sui loong baus in Shanghai recently.

What you are missing is the incredible image quality (indoor and outdoor) a Leica M8 can produce, if you have a discerning eye!

Here's a shot done indoors with light coming in from a window. I find it very pleasing and I would not have gotten the same result from the Canon 5D I owned at the time, which required no UV/IR filter.

The UV/IR filter is no more of a burden than the UV filter most people have on their lenses. Once you have this filter on the lens, you are good to go. If you are doing B&W conversions, this filter is not needed, but you don't have to remove the filter if you are. All this filter does is correct the magenta color you get from black fabric and black surfaces if you don't use it, as in the purple color of the shirt in the first photo at the beginning of this thread.

The fact that the M8 has been such a success is a testament to the wisdom of having designed the sensor without the UV/IR filter on it, that would have compromised image quality. It was a bold action but one that most of us are O.K. with.

The M8 has been out for nearly three years, and you've just now discovered it needs IR/UV filters for lenses used on it? There have been many lengthy threads on this topic, so I'd suggest you do a search if you're interested. There happen to be some advantages to not having the IR filter on the sensor.
