arbitrage opportunities

M9 prices have gotten a little strange. List price is $6995 in the US, where sales taxes seldom exceed 8% and and can be zero in Delaware or on the Internet. But it is unobtainable for an unknown length of time there.

In the UK, the prices work out to $6600 to $6700 before VAT, and there seems to be a steady flow of new units reaching eager hands. On the continent, the price exclusive of VAT seems to be more like $6775 (in Germany) and I hear moans about scarce supplies.

So it seems that the less is paid into the Leica distribution channel, the more cameras there are available. Does anyone understand this?

Isn't the relevant currency the Euro rather than the USD?

Incidentally, anyone in the UK and USA minded to get an M9 should consider getting one sooner rather than later. The Euro has been strengthening quite a bit recently and I'd imagine Leica will need to consider a price rise soon (January would be a convenient time for a 5% or so hike).

Euro is only 0.7% stronger against the dollar since 9/9, so don't see much need for price change vs. US $. Sterling is another story, the Euro is up 4.8% since 9/9.

Personally, I'm just hoping one comes in for me before the M10 comes out...

I could convert all the prices (w.o. tax) into zlotys if they were still in use and the result would be the same. I guess if there was some point when prices were set to be equal in all currencies, then the dollar has strengthened since that moment. But during the M8's lifetime, I believe it was always less expensive to purchase in the US.

...and don't forget the VAT hike at the end of the year...

Supplies in the UK seem to have slowed to a trickle - sob, sob still waiting for mine. Could this have anything to do with exchange rates - i just don't know. Most manufacturers arbitrage/hedge against currency fluctuations.

Add to that the fact that--in my experience--Leica generally raises prices on new models a year or so after introduction.
