Crazy Image Artifact on Leica M8 Classic...

Hey Guys,

So I just got a high serial M8, serial number in the 333xxxx range, so I figured this is past any of the initial problems stated with this model.

Unfortunately the only lens I have to test with is a Voigtlander 35mm 1.4 Nokton Classic. It's been performing very well for my needs especially considering the price. I'm sure I'll upgrade to Leica glass eventually for this FL but probably not right away.

Anyways, this is my first M, and first digital rangefinder, so I'm not sure if this is a typical "you're not supposed to do this, dummy" type situation, and if this problem is an issue with the lens or the sensor.

I shot these series of images straight into a lightbulb, wide open, ISO 640, 1/30 sec.

The image very clearly has a green/yellow STREAK emanating from the light source, which has a soft edge up until around halfway through the frame, where it abruptly ends. This only happens when the strong light source is at the very edge of the frame, or the corners of the frame.

I have included a full sized crop of the end of the streak, which clearly looks like a digital artifact. All other images were just resized, no PP applied.

Question is, is this a problem with the sensor? I realise this is an extreme situation and would not normally shoot like this, but I have NEVER seen an artifact like this before from any camera I have ever owned.

One thing I noticed is that if I shade the lens with my hand, the streak goes away. I have attached one image that reflects this change.

One other note - The streak did not go away with several permutations:

-Stopping Down at all apertures down to f/5.6

-Trying higher or lower ISO values

-Trying different shutter speeds from 1/15sec to 1/125 sec.

This is normal-as crazy as it sounds.

There is "nothing wrong" with your M8, at least not that it can be repaired.

This streak is referred here as green blob- it appears only if you have a strong light source at the exact edge of the frame. In practice it turns out not to be a big problem since it does not show up often but it does ruin a picture or two a year.

All sensor issues with M8 (perform search in LUF to read about them): green blob, pixel bleeding, ir filter reflections.

Out of all, I found that the last one is the biggest issue of all.

I still have doubts that M9 is also not immune on this.

cookedart,

Sorry to disappoint you, but your M8 was built in April/May 2007. I bought mid June 2007 two new M8 with serial numbers 333xxxx. The latest M8 original are 32xxxxx which were built early 2008. :o

Though, as other members pointed out, this problem is normal.

It's a known problem with the M8. It's caused by a very bright light source just out of the frame.

With me, this green line/streak (it is not the green blob which was an early teething problem) showed up only once in 5000+ actuations!

No worries, just a reason to chimp occasionally when taking pictures into strong light.

I've experienced this problem on at least two separate occasions over the last six months of M8 ownership. Once was while shooting outdoors at the Montreal Jazz Fest over the summer (ruined pretty much all of my good shots from that night ) and the other was while I was taking some snaps in our crawl space. In my experience, it's not as rare as some would have you believe but perhaps it's also not that common either. Now I know to either not to shoot straight into light if I can avoid it (at the outdoor show, I was shooting straight into the stage with its strong spotlights) or bring my MP which never had this problem. :p

art, see also the M8 FAQ available for download at Leica Camera AG - Downloads.

4.3 Bright sources of light near the image edges occasionally lead to a green stripe reaching all the way to the centre of the image.

Leica is aware of this effect and its cause. Unfortunately, it won’t be possible to eliminate this effect with a firmware update. The stripes can be avoided, if it is paid attention that very bright light sources (such as headlights etc.) are not reproduced at the very edge of the image
